1999 dodge 2500 abs light problem

I just bought this truck and the abs light and the red parking brake light are one. I took it to a shop to scan and he told me the controller was bad and told me it was $650 for a new one. Well I went on ebay and found a used one for $50. I put it in but it didnt change anything. Sometimes you start the truck and the lights are off and stay off, other times the lights are off then come on while your driving and other times the lights are on as soon as you start it. Has anyone has any problems like this. Is it possible the guy who scanned it was wrong and its not a abs contoller. Should I just bit the bullet and take it to dodge and have them scan it? Thanks

If the brakes are operating normal, you might get a free scan at the local chain type auto parts store then we can discuss the trouble code(s)..

abs light

Do you know of any places that will lend the abs scanner out. I just called auto zone and kragen and neither one lends out scanners anymore.

They'll scan it at the store if it's safe to drive.

I would check your speed sensors going to the hub bearing. I rubbed through one of mine and it trippped the lights. Just a thought.

Check and see if your blower motor and reverse lights are working or not. I had a similar problem with the lights you are talking about and did not have reverse lights or blower motor. Problem ended up being my ignition switch was bad and the Dodge replacement switch included a wiring harness that had a relay for the blower motor.

My ABS and Brake light are on ALL the time. I figure one of the sensors is bad but not sure how to diagnose which one. When I had the tranny replaced they looked for codes related to the tranny but found no codes. Are the codes for the tranny stored seperately from the rest of the truck? My assumption is no. So if there were no codes for the tranny, there are no codes for the ABS sensors either.

There are codes for both, it takes an auto trans & ABS capable scanner to read them.

I found a broken ABS wire on the passenger side front hub on my Olds Bravada...replaced it (wire & wheel speed sensor is one assembly) with a used one with great success.

Okay, so the scanner the tranny guy was using probably only worried about the tranny codes so no codes read ment no "tranny codes" read. I'll hit Autozone in the next couple of days and see what they show. Or, does the ignition switch trick work on a '99?

The ignition switch scan started with the 2000 model year but you can't hurt anything by trying in case yours is a very late '99. Turn the keyswitch On-Off-On-Off-On then look at the odometer.

Most likely it is a bad speed sensor in your rear axle. And when it is off it proabably stays off until you hit about 50 mph or so? Had similar problem and it was just my rear sensor along with a few parts I broke while on a construction site.
