Help - 2003 Dodge Ram 1500 won't start

Hi, new here, I washed my truck yesterday and now my truck won't start. All the lights are solid when I turn the key. The starter works but the engine won't turn over. The battery is good and have tried to jump start but nothing seems to make it run. Any ideas???

Since you said you washed it.. I am going to have to ask you - did you clean the motor? Your ignition coil or packs might be wet.

When you say it won't turn over.. is it not making any attempt to start?

When you turn the key to START - nothing happens.. the lights stay lit? OR GO OUT?

Make sure your truck is in PARK or Netural as well..

Since you said YESTERDAY you washed it - have you driven it / started it since you've washed it... or is this the 1st time attempting to start it since you washed it...

When you say it won't turn over.. is it not making any attempt to start? I try to turn it on but it won't turn over. But, we have checked and the starter is working fine.

When you turn the key to START - nothing happens.. the lights stay lit? OR GO OUT? When I turn the key to start, the lights are all lit but the gauges don't move.

Make sure your truck is in PARK or Netural as well..I have the truck in neutral.

Since you said YESTERDAY you washed it - have you driven it / started it since you've washed it... or is this the 1st time attempting to start it since you washed it...I tried to start it yesterday after washing it. The lights all came on and it turned over, started and shut right off. Then it wouldn't turn over again. My truck is a 2003 Dodge Ram 1500 4.7 litre engine, 5 speed 4x4. Thanks for any help.

So the engine isn't cranking over..

Since you said the lights on the dash don't go out - something isn't allowing your truck to engage..

When I start mine - all my lights turn off..

When you turn the key to ON - do the gauges then move??

When you turn the key to ON - do the gauges then move?? None of the gauges work. When I turn the key to on, the dash lights go out. My father in law is a mechanic and was here this morning trying to figure out what is wrong. We could not find any reason for the truck not to start. It worked when I pulled it into the drive to wash it and when I went to move it after it just wouldn't turn over. Just got a call from my father in law saying that the battery is registering weak. We are going to get a new battery to give that a try. Will post if that works. Thanks for all the help so far. I truly appreciate it.

1. First check battery connections for corrosion, clean.
2. do your headlights turn on? if not them your battery is discharged and or has faulty plates and you need to replace it, try using a different battery to start.
3. transmission fully in park shift it back and forth a couple of times.
4. broken or loose connection in starter circuit , inspect all connections battery, starter, ignition switch
5.pinion on starter might be jammed in flywheel , put in gear and rock vehicle back and forth to try to disengage. then remove and inspect the starter pinion and flywheel for defects
6.try checking the fuel system.

hope this helps.

ps. don't jump start it , remove your battery and use the other to try to start.

Well
twice since Ive had mine it wouldn't start.
once the steering wheel was locked over too far(wheel cranked on hill) and the key wouldn't turn. Torqued the wheel and rocked the truck to disengage and start.
and once parked in the garage and turned it off before putting it in park and then had to put it in gear and rock the truck to reset the pinion on starter, to then start the truck.

But 80% of the time it is the battery not having enough cold cranking amps to turn over the modern engines which have a higher compression than the old cars did.
You nowdays really need a good and reliable battery in your vehicle, because of all the electronics and then have very narrow tolerances for voltage variations.

Even if the battery is the problem, a boost should still get it started, or turning over at the very least. You mentioned that it started, shut off right away and won't start again. Could be a problem with your key not being recognized by the ECU?

Not necessarily, if there are fused plates in the bad battery the voltage will be off,

12V with 9.2V yields a 10.6V

and the modern electronics will not recognize it as adequate to run the system . low voltage, although you will have enough amperage.

Hi all, thanks for all the responses. I went out and got and installed a new battery, the truck still won't start. Tried my spare key and that didn't work either. All the connections are in order so I have no clue what happened.

Seriously , you need to try and put it in gear,(do not turn the key on ,in the ignition) and rock you truck back and forth, this might release the pinion in the starter , and then you can put it back in park and try to start it again. It has happened a few times to some of us, and it is free to try .
give it a go on the steps that I listed earlier. Otherwise you are stuck with a tow and taking it to a dealer to find out what is wrong.

Maybe a fuse. On my 97 ram it did the same thing. I tried everything finally checked the fuses and had one blown. Changed it out and it started right up. Just a suggestion.

Is the truck new to you? I have had the truck three years now.

Maybe a fuse. On my 97 ram it did the same thing. I tried everything finally checked the fuses and had one blown. Changed it out and it started right up. Just a suggestion. Thanks, all the fuses are fine none are blown.

My father in law is checking to see where we can bring it (our local Dodge dealer/shop closed). And will be putting it on his flatbed to bring it to a repair shop. Hopefully we can figure out what happened. Unfortunately, now I will have to use the wife's minivan for work.

Might be a long shot but do the key trick if it works..Turn the key to on section (not to start) off-on-off-on-off-on and keep it on. If you have any codes it would pop up on odometer if not it will read done.

With the Macarena playing in the background … The Dodge code "Key Dance".

Turn the key ON-OFF-ON-OFF-ON within about 5 seconds. Your odometer will then display any codes one at a time. The displayed codes will start with a letter with three digit numbers. Something like P0123 or B1234 and you'll know it's done 'cause it will say "done".

Have a pen and pad readily and write the codes down. There’s a DT Thread that has all of the Dodge codes and you can check it out for yourself. But be sure and keep us in the loop so we would things are going.

If you start a thread, be responsible and post the final outcome.
