As it says above.
I saw my mechanic today and he told me $3000 to fix it by removing the motor, crank ground, resize bearings etc.
Forget that I said! lol
I will be removing the engine now with some mates and have it bored out to a 2.2 litre! The machine shop will fit bearings etc and guarantee the motor for $1500!
I will then mount my race spec head back on. As well as have them fit some higher comp pistons for me!
Bit of a bugger but I been walking for 3 weeks now so another few months wont hurt me! lol
Good reason to upgrade. I looked at the 2.4 swap but we only have pt cruisers here in Aus with that size block and they are still very new here. Too pricey!
Oh well, its gonna be even faster then when its done! Woohoo

Yeah!
But not like this! lol
Tip of the day:
When u get what u think is a valve train tick it COULD be a bad rod bearing! After replacing my whole valve train thats what it was. Only took afew days of normal city driving to score the crank that bad it needed machining!

Well, heres the delio!
I am having my current short block re-machined. New flat top pistons, new rods, new bearings, lightened machined crank (rev, rev!), new rings and the biggie.....................................having the cylinders bored to approx. 2.2 litre capacity (machine shop said just under 2.2 litre).
Now thats gonna up the torque!
Cost is $2200! But I remove the motor and take it to the mechanic and he works it and builds it and gives it back to me as a long block with my race spec head etc installed. I then dump the motor back in. Atleast setting the timing will be dead easy with the motor out! lol
Won't take long at all to remove and re-install the motor surely.

He said ok then, lets build the ass outa it! lol
Sweet
I don't have many problems with my car at all sohc98. This is the first time that the car has broken down on its own accord, that is without my stupid help! Seeing as its done 138,000 klms thats pretty good really.

If I don't go close to 190 crank hp after this there is a problem!
Installing 60 mm tb and box intake manifold at the same time.
Dyno time soon to follow! I can't wait!

Well, heres the update on my build. YES its still not completed, have another near month to wait! Argh.

I went to the machine shop today doing the work for me.
The have removed the motor and started to dismantle it.
They discovered afew problems that have been like that FROM THE FACTORY!
Firstly the bottom end bearings have totally delaminated from the backing metal! A bad set from the factory the head fuy said! Then next he said whats the oil consumption been like? I said its gotten worse lately and told him I was told new valve stem seals would fix it. He then tells me that they have measured the bore of each cylinder to find that cylinders 1 & 2 are fine but that 3 & 4 are BIGGER bores with the same size pistons and rings in it! lol
He said there is no sign at all of the motor being torn down before and machined. Everything still had the original factory seals and torqued up right. In cylinders 3 & 4 there was 50 thou play between the cylinder walls and the rings! And, the funny thing is there was NO smoke from the exhaust!!!!
It seems the factory did two different bore sizes on the motor half way thru the production! lol (What tha????)
So now anyway they have started to clean and machine the block.
Its getting dipped soon and bored 40 thou over. The block is also being decked 30 thou to up the compression. Then they are respraying the block bright red for me. They are going to do a compresssion calculation for me then to determine what pistons we want to install. 9:8.1 is standard for a 2001. Mine is closer to 10:1.1 with my decked head. Another 30 thou off the block I should be close to 10:4.1 overall compression.
The crank is also being cleaned and machined for oversize race bearings and then lightened a tad.
He said its gonna be a weapon when its installed. Apparently it will rev up like a 1.6 litre Jap motor but still have good low down torque. With the overbore and higher compression he thinks I should gain about 18 crank hp on 98 octane fuel. (standard premium fuel here in Aus). I am half shafting my throttlebody this weekend too and gonna start my box style intake manifold. This is gonna be a totally different car me thinks. Look out standard wrx's! Normal n/a ricers are not gonna stand a chance! lol.
I can't wait to do afew pulls on the dyno and take it for afew runs at the local drag strip. Video to come in the next month or so!
