Malfunction Indicator Light

Anyone have any issues with the malfunction indicator light. Mine came on this evening. The engine didn't seem to run any different than the last time I drove it. Could the cold have any affect? It's been in the mid teens and windy all day. I restarted the truck and no changes.

What year truck do you have.

You could try the key trick

Off-on off-on off-on and the code should scroll where the mileage is. If you have an 04, go down to Advance Auto and have them read the code for you. They will do it for free for you. Just because you have a CEL on, does not mean that the engine will run different. Once you get the code, post it up here so we can help you.

Well...Unfortunately, I have heard the key trick does not work on the 04's....Although some say it works....I say just take it in and have them read it. They can also reset it for free for you.

It can come on for many reasons and some you can't tell anything is wrong, it could be something that affects the emissions that would only affect mileage, it could just be a loose gas cap.

The Off-On trick didn't work. I'll head to Advance Auto later today and post the code(s) this evening. Thanks for the help!

The error code is P0406 "EGR Flow Sensor A Circuit High Input." While driving this evening I noticed the truck surging at low speeds (~20 mph) like it wanted to go but couldn't. The tach would jump from 1000 to 1500 rpm and then fall as low as 200 rpm and then jump back up to normal (600 rpms at idle not moving or normal between 1500-2000 at speed).

EGR valve is bad or needs cleaning, they can carbon up and stick.

The EGR valve takes the exhaust gas and ports it to the intake. The EGR valve will build up with carbon and the valve will get sticky or it will not work all together.

Without hooking up to a computer I'm guessing at the most common fix for that code and that the EGR valve.

Thanks for all the help! Is an EGR easy to clean or replace? I work with a bunch of aircraft mechanics i was going to see if one of them may be able to help or is this something that may be covered under warranty? Bought the truck new in Dec. 2004

I would think the EGR valve is covered under the emissions warranty which is 7year 70000 mile. Look in your warranty book. Any good A&P should have the right size hammer to fix any dodge.

To clean an egr valve, remove it and douse it thorougly in brake cleaner.
Do not scratch any of the surfaces, use just a clean cloth/stiff brush and wipe out any/all chambers to rid it of carbon build up.
Do not get the cleaner into any palstic electrical parts.
Refit and test.

Thanks for all the help. I called Dodge and told them that I want them to extended the warranty and fix the EGR since I'm two months out side 3 years. They said a dealer needs to inspect and document and to call them back after the inspection. When I called the dealer they said it would be about $300 without looking at it. However to get it inspected it's going to cost about $100 and maybe Dodge will reimburse. I'm taking it in in about 2 hours. This truck has been a real pain in the a$$ lately. I just put $400 into repairs and two days later this mess started.
