My 2001 Durango R/T with 78k miles is stuck in park. For the past month I have noticed that it took at least two attempts to get in reverse. Tranny seems fine when driving. Parked the car the other day and now I cant get out of park. My mechanic contacted Dodge the other day and found out there was a recent recall on the shift interlock. Dodge has not seen the car yet but they said on the phone this may or may not be the problem. Anybody out there have any idea and is this a recent recall Thanks much

I haven't heard of a recall for this. The cable might just need an adjustment.

Do you turn your steering wheel just before you shut the engine off?

Next time try to turn the wheel (oneway will be tight, the other will give just a little) I'm guessing it the steer wheel lock not releasing due to a bind condition.

Picked up my Durango today from Dodge. It was the Gear shift lever blocker. They fixed it for free under the recall. I had never heard of this recall but my nechanic did some research for me and found it . Said it just came out in December 07. Thanks for responding.

haha that happened tp me a few years ago when my d was still under warranty. literally broke the end of the shift knob, dangled by wires there for like 2 days.

Hello,
I just went through this with my 01. My mechanic told me that the there is a springloaded pin in the column, that locks the column from coming out of park. When he got the cover off, he told me that the assembly was corroded, thus causing the pin to lock up. He cleaned everything and lubricated everything, and its been working great. He charged me 60.00, which I was pleased with. Good luck.
