How do you remove the fan and fan clutch from the pully on the motor? Im wanting to install my flex fan. I called autozone to see if they had the special tool and they said they didnt have it......everytime i try to turn it counterclockwise it just moves the belt cause there is not enough tention on it. Even the service manual says there is a special tool....so if i cant get the tool how do i get it off? Here are some pics of what i have:

I can't get that f*cking fan off to save my life. Who ever put your fans on at the factory must have been p*ssies.

On our Durango, I used locking vice grips on the pulley to hold it in place (let it rest on something sticking out of the block) while I broke the bolt loose.

i used the same technique fireman46 used except my home brew tool was a thin board. came off really easy. the holes for the bolts shown above are spaced exactly 3 inches apart so it will fit into the pulley

I made a tool. I measured the holes at 3 1/16th or 3 1/8th. Either way, my tool is bent to sh*t.

I did what fireman did, but I used a LARGE C clamp on the fan bolt instead of a big crescent wrench. I wedged my homebrew "special" tool against the alternator pulley so all I had to do was pull on the C clamp. Voila! The horsies can run free...

Lotsa folks just whack h*ll out of a big crescent wrench with a hammer. I tried the "homebrew" gadget approach, but all it did for me was raise my BP
I finally took it to a shop and they took it off for $25. I've since bought a spanner to hold the pulley for if/when the water pump needs replacement.

I tried different tools, WD-40, and going Postal on it; I end up having to pull the water pump. Even with the pump and pulley on the bench, I couldn't get the pulley to break free. So I got a new water pump and put the rest of the parts in the trash.
