Installing winch in van, need advice

I'm installing a Superwinch 3500 (a 12v winch with wired remote, for pulling our racecar onto and off the trailer) in the rear of our '96 Grand Voyager.
I have the winch installed (sits just in front of the thing you turn to lower the spare), but I don't have it wired up yet. I'd post pics of it, but the host I use for images is banned, and shows up as astrisks. My question is this: should I run a wire all the way to the battery, or can I splice something for a shorter trip to +12Vdc, like ther rear accessory outlet? Even better would be to just get a plug at Radio Shack, and plug the winch in whenever I need it, but I'm concerned about current draw. I don't want to pop a fuse or worse trying to winch the racecar onto or off the trailer. Any help is appreciated. -Vengance 1996 Neon ACR 1996 Plymouth Grand Voyager SE 2002 Dodge Avenger Last edited by Vengance : 05-20-2002 at 01:04 PM. |

I know this isn't quite a response you're looking for, but what is a Superwinch 3500?

With the current draw of a winch you will need to have heavy cable run directly from the battery to the outlet. Not sure of the guage wire (which would be based on the current draw and run length)...perhaps others can chime in with that info
![]() You will need to put in a breaker or fuse as close to the battery as possible. This is your protection to avoid a melt down and should not be overlooked. The info that comes with the winch should detail that for ya.. Superwinch also has a website at http://www.superwinch.com/ Hope this helps!
