I have a 2004 Ram 2500 SLT 4X4 Quadcab. I just recently had the gears changed from 3.73 to 4.56 AAM. After the breakin period, when I would do highway speeds over 70, I would get a driveshaft vibration. Took the truck to a shop in the Pontiac, MI area to have the driveshaft balanced. After several tries to balance, they were still getting a harmonic hum on the machine they use. Truck will produce driveshaft vibration when I start to get close to 80 now. Driveshaft shop recomended going back to Dodge and have them replace the rear driveshaft (I have an extended warantee). They think there is something wrong with the rear driveshaft and that replacing it with a new one should fix the problem. They mentioned that the gear shop where I had the install is good and that the problem is definately in the driveshaft. Oh bye the way, I forgot to mentioned that I had the dealership replace all U joints just 2 days before I had the gears replaced (I didn't drive on the highway between the U joint change and gear install).

My question is, should the original (OEM) driveshaft on a 2500 be able to handle the increased spinning due to the new 4.56 gears? I notice that a lot of you guys are going from 3.55 to 4.56 in 1500's and not having driveshaft vibration.

I spoke to the service tech at the Dodge dealership and explained the situation and he said to bring it in on Tuesday and they would take care of it. I'm hoping that replacing the driveshaft with a new one does the trick.

I've been battling this same problem...did it before new tires and rims...does it with new tires and rims. I haven't gotten the drivelines balanced yet...but that's next. You will also note that when you get to about 87mph or so it goes away

Replacing driveshaft didn't fix harmonic vibration (looks like a waste of money and wasn't covered under warrantee due to having the original shaft rebalanced) . Now I have a spare driveshaft with U joints that have less than 1000 miles. Dealership has a call into DaimlerChrysler powertrain engineering questioning if the stock driveshaft was engineered to handle the 4.56 gear (increased spinning). The faint vibration comes in at about 80. I haven't noticed if the vibration goes away due to the 2500's stiff suppension and the Michigan roads adding to the excitement when you get to 90. Probable shouldn't even be going this fast.

Save your money on the balancing until I can get an answer.

My 1500 has a noticable driveline vibration at 90+ mph. This is with the stock 3.92 gears aswell. I was planning on getting the driveshaft rebalenced in the future, but it seems this may not be a fix for the problem?

I have the 3.7 V6 with the single drive shaft. I had to replace the ujoints with a set of greaseable joints before I was able to get rid of the vibration.

Jimmy TJ,
I believe I have the 545RFE transmission. Not sure if the overdrives in the transmission could cause this vibration but, a good thought. Could be exhaust when in overdrive although I don't recall that before I changed the gears. When I took my truck to a driveshaft specialist, they were pretty sure the problem was in the driveshaft. After balancing and replacing the vibration persists. I've almost given up on any solution. The guy that installed my gears told me that this problem was common in Mustangs. He said the manufacture only designed the shafts to work within what they are going to use them for. I have a friend who is a DaimlerChrysler engineer and he pretty much confirmed that. I'm still waiting on the official word from the dealership.

I wouldn't give up just yet I know of several very good custom driveshaft shops from back in my Jeepin' days. Tom Wood's Driveshafts is one that comes to mind. My friend is using a set of his driveshafts on a 8" lifted Jeep Cherokee and they are very nice.

Heres their website : http://www.4xshaft.com/index.html

I spoke to the service writer from the dealership today, who had received information from a Chrysler drivetrain engineer that the stock driveshaft on the 2500 (probable the 1500 also) can't handle the 4.56 gears and no amount of balancing will fix the problem. The engineer said that the hum you get at about 80 is definitely coming from the rear shaft. A different shaft had to be created for the power wagon. They are checking to see if the rear driveshaft part from a 2006 power wagon will work. I kind of got the impression that the 2005 power wagon had vibration problems also (could be wrong).
Looks like possible options are power wagon driveshaft (assuming it works), or have custom shaft made (how much $ and will it work) or live with the hum when you get past 80 mph.

I love how the gears work with this truck up to about 80. If you are sensitive to vibration, I wouldn't put 4.56 gears in our trucks. Of course if you put an after market exhaust on, its probable already causing a drone and you'll never notice the driveshaft vibration.

Any updates on this my local DTW bro?

I don't get drone, my frickin' seat shakes me bad enough to cause any cavity fillings to almost come loose. I don't have it in the steering wheel, it's completely in the floor, seats, and even I can see/feel it in the door armrest as the door moves up and down.

I'm going to replace my u-joints tomorrow and I hope that's the issue, but I too have 4.56 gears and wondered also if the shaft can't handle the increased rotations? I get a wahhh wahhh hum noise when I get up to just about 90 and it freaks me out, along with the violent shaking and lovely MI roads, not to mention all the orange barrels now

if you are going to pull the shafts why not balance them at the same time the shops here in MN charge around 35 each for that

Here is the email I got from the service tech at the dodge dealership who was in contact with the engineer. I don't fully understand what is needed but, at this point I'm living with the vibration. Your right, it is a seat of the pants vibration and hum. At the end of the year, I'm going to put a larger tire (265 to 285) and hope that helps.

Here is the email I got.
"I talked to the engineer in regards to your problem. You aren't going to be
able to eliminate that vibration without doing some MORE extreme
modifications of angles with cv shafts both driveshafts the t/case to frame
space too."

Well I went from 275's to 33's which are like 285's and that didn't help my vibe at all.

Truck is at the dealer now, waiting for me to pick it up this afternoon ... my pass. side halfshaft was shot. I could move it at least 6" in any direction without any effort at all.

I am pretty sure that was my vibe and the groan noise I would hear at 90mph, and why the vibe seemed more in the front, ecspecially after I replaced the rear u-joints with greasable one's.

Keep us posted bro, have you checked your front halfshafts for excessive play?

your dealers sound like there just as messed up ass mine
lol
i snapped my drive shaft in half back in augest or september
and am still dealing with problems with the truck
first problem that they say is normal or they cant hear it is
1. under meduim to hard accelaration when the tranny shifts into 2nd gear it pings like peices are being thorwn agaist the casing, and when you rev it up in park or neutral it does the same
2. rear end gears were replaced, but they didnt set it up right or replace the seals in it
3.the pinion nut came lose on the on the rear end to cause dif oil all over the bottom of my truck and my drive way they just zipped it down with in impact so now its notset to spec
4. go drive in tight circles in the parking lot and it slipps and clunks
5. tranny dont down shift when it should when you jump on it it will just pull the whole gear instead of downshifting
lol
yea my dealer is horrible
im waiting for my gf to get her car so i can drop it off at moss motors in riverside

2500 doesn't have half shafts, it has a solid axle. Glad you solved your vibration problem.

I am new to this site, but somewhat relieved that I am not the only one with the vibration problem.

I recently replaced my 3.73 gears with 4.56's from AAM. Completely stock gears for the power wagon and also had the Power Wagons locking diff. (also made by AAM) installed in the rear. Ever since I had this done, I get a subtle, but very noticeable vibration throughout the truck at 55mph and above. I can feel it in the steering wheel, the seat, the car doors, everywhere. I've spent thousands on the parts and install (literally) and no one can solve the problem. I've had all the U-joints replaced front and back, the driveshaft balanced, the differential bearings checked twice, and now the mechanic is taking the locking diff. carrier to be balanced. The truck is mostly stock except for 285 tires, no lift, no chip, no catback, no modified air intake, even stock shocks. The tires have been balanced twice, rotated, and the truck has been put on jacks and "driven" to 60mph...with and without the tires. I still get the vibration without the tires.

This is costing too much money with no answers, anybody have any ideas?

What kind of diff setup up front do you have? Is it a solid front axle? Or independent?

What I mean is do you have halfshafts? If so, check their play.

I have a solid/live axle upfront so I don't think I have any half shafts to be investigating. Good thought though...
