Metal Chunks in Rear Differential

Here is another thread about metal pieces found in our rear differentials. This has sometimes been referred to as the "c-clip" problem, however, I believe that my pieces were part of the clutch pack retainer. The picture shows what I found when I changed the rear differential fluid as part of regular preventive maintenance. I have a LSD and the milage is 70K. I took the truck to the dealer and they confirmed that the whole rear end had to be rebuilt/replaced (thank God I had the 7 year 100,000 mile powertrain warranty because he confirmed that the charge would have been over $2,000). This is what the invoice indicated:

Bearing-differential (1) 5072506AA
Bearing-drive pinion (1) 5017438AA
spacer-drive pinion bearing (1) 3507678
seal-drive pinion (1) 52070340AB
lubricant (2) 4874469
lubricant (1) 4318060AB
sealer (1) 82300234
bearing-drive pinion (1) 5072498AA
differential-differential (1) 5161549AA
Labor - bearings, differential side differential side-bearing-all axle replace (includes case and side gears if necessary)

Yep, that's the retaining clips that break and the big half circle piece is what creeps out and rubs the bearing cap. You probably have a big groove in the bearing cap too.

My whole axle assemble was replaced. The dealer didn't do any differential work. They just swapped out the old one with the new one. This way the gears are set up at the factory.

It's always been a clutch pack retainer problem, there was never an issue with any "c" clips. Someone initialy mis-spoke and it took off. If you ever get a chance to actually look at the c clips in these rear ends it will be obvious they aren't breaking any time soon.

Welcome to Dodgetalk and
he is correct .... the "c" clips are what hold the axles in ..... Welcome to the notorious Broken Clip Club http://www.dodgetalk.com/forums/show...oken+clip+club
