I have an 03 Dodge Ram 1500 4x4 5.7 Hemi truck. I remember reading in the manual that the Dodge trucks have gas reserves for emergency situations. Pretty much your gas meter hits 0 miles. After it hits 0 miles it's using the reserve gas as emergency.

I remember reading that the reserves is something like 10% of the tank. Is that correct? Anyone have more info on this?

It's not a "reserve" as much as it is a very conservative gas gauge and fuel computer. I have driven mine as far as 6 miles while the "Distance To Empty" said ZERO. When I filled her up, I figured there were still about 3 gallons left in the tank.

Ive driven mine roughly 60 miles when the DTE said 0. It is VERY conservative...

I think I've driven at least 50 miles with DTE at 0. I'm thinking of purchasing a small gas can and running the truck outta gas to solve this once and for all.

50 miles after hitting zero?? Wow! I always keep driving after zero but I usually stop at about 4 miles below zero. I don't wanna risk it. But now I think I'll be driving a lot more after I hit that zero now that I've read that.

Actually it's intended as a reserve from the factory. If I remember right from the owners manual when DTE says zero you have 10% left and when the gauge beeps you have 3% left.

Definitely NOT an option with my truck.... although I consistently go WAYYYYYY past DTE 0, and end up putting slightly more than 34 gals in my short wheelbase 2500 . Summertime, 625 + miles on a tank

.
The other day, on my way to fill my '06 CTD back up, when my DTE display got down to 29 miles left, it switched to reading "Fuel Lo" instead of reading miles.

2006 and 2007 models do this instead of going all the way to "0 DTE" - probably to prevent people from pushing the limits, like some who posted in this thread obviously do.

I'm really cautious.......never let any of my trucks get much lower than 1/8th of a tank.

See I have heard this and I find it extremely dubious. This is not a shot at you LPG, just since it came up. I can't believe that #1 there is that much crap in the fuel tank. If there is that is a major quality control or corrosion defect of the tank. And #2, the fuel line coming out of the tank MUST be at the bottom or you would run out of gas way before empty all the time, so even when you fill up, your gas is coming from the bottom of the tank. #3, think about the jostling your truck takes during normal driving. Put a bottle of soda in your cup holder and watch it as you drive over bumps, gutters, potholes, normal bumps in the road, hard turns etc. Your fuel tank is basically being subjected to paint shaker conditions on a regular basis. So any crap that WAS in there is routinely being shaken up and sucked through your fuel system anyway.

Bottom line- my theory is that the "crap in the tank" reason to not run lower on your fuel quantity is an urban legend. Anyone have data that says I'm wrong?
