I own a 2004 Durango Limited with the 4.7L, I started hearing a ticking noise coming from the passenger side engine area. The ticking is real distinct when I start the car up and at idle. when the car warms up the noise is there faintly. The noise is kind of embarrassing;however, I can't pinpoint where the ticking is coming from.

Is it a constant tick like a clock or does it just tick or pop every few seconds. if it is not constant, it could be the cat coverter warming up and expanding. Mine does it during the winter mostly and it is realtively loud. Eventaully as the cat warms up it goes away.

Since the weather got warmer i havent really noticed it.

The noise you are hearing is probably a loose manifold bolt or a broken one, this occurs quite frequently. When the engine is cold the gap between the exhaust manifold and the block is at its widest. As the engine heats up the parts expand from the heat and it quiets down or it stops completely. Most likely the exhaust manifold bolts need to be tightened.

Thanks for that tip I will definitely see if they are tight. My Durango sounds like a motor boat.

Well I just removed the exhaust manifold cover and guess what the top bolt closest to the firewall was sheared off. I started the car up and I can feel the exhaust escaping from that area. Awesome! Now I am debating should I go to the dealer and order all new bolts and a gasket and do it myself or take it in. I am worried about getting the sheared bolt off and other bolts breaking. I am hoping to just put some vice grips around the sheared bolt to take it off I'm sure it is not that easy.

If it's still under warranty, I would take it to the dealer and have them do it. If not, I would do it myself. Good luck with this.
