  Unhappy 95 Ram Van 1500 stalling - Posted: 06-09-2006, 11:22 AM

My van started stalling while riding down the road. At first it was only stalling after about 15 miles. This morning it stalled before I left my street. It usually will start back up, but sometimes takes 4 or 5 times to get going again. It runs fine when it runs, but when it cuts off the speedometer and oil pressure quit reading but we still have power and readings on evrything else. It doesn't seem to matter if you are slowing down or accelerating. Any advice?

Fuel pump perhaps?

The oil pressure gauge will stop reading because the engine shuts off.

Also under the hood is the power distribution box (next to the battery), see if you can see any evidence of any burned or corroded wires.

Have you tried to find the problem code yet?

Turn the key to an almost start three times, on-off-on-off-on. Then look at the digital odemeter. A code will show up if any or a "P-done" will appear.

Then search the internet for the code number.

You will spend a small $$$$ just picking and choosing what "could-be" the problem.

On my van it was the engine coil. It couldn't maintain the proper voltage.

Dont know if its easy or not, I just remember him telling me his would just shut right off when coming to a stop, but always start back up, he took it to 2 shops, the 2nd shop replaced the valve and the problem was fixed.

Mine has done the same stall about 6 times over the last 12 or so years, out of no where, then starts back up no prblem, so he had mentioned to me it was his egr.

Nick,

I got my Haynes book out right now. Grant it, it's not detailed like the DCX service manual, but it has some good stuff in it.

Code

12 Battery power to PCM was disconnected.

45 Trans Temp Sensor Voltage too low, voltage less than 1.55 volts.

11 No crank Reference Signal at PCM, No crank reference signal detected during engine cranking. (ouch! that sounds bad.)

55 End of code listing.

Code 12 is typical is you had ever changed the batter yin the vehicle or had to disconnect the battery for service. Nothing alarming there.

Code 45 is interesting. You may need to look at the wiring, temp sensor and voltage up to the PCM.

Code 11 can be fustrating. There must be some sort of sensor that is tied into the engine cranking and the timing. If the PCM looses that singnal, does the engine shut off???

That's about it. I'll skim more in the Haynes manual at these codes. Maybe someone here has had Code 11 or 45 and fix that.

Stev

AutoZone carries the Tranny Temp Sensors dealing with code 45.

Code 45 is somewhat strange. Have you had trans problems shifting?

So, if your's is bad and does not have 5 volts, check the wire harness for damage and replace the sensor.

http://www.autozone.com/servlet/UiBr...3d8004b897.jsp

It's hard to find info on this sensor for the Dodge Ram Vans. We have them, but where are they located on the tranny???

Here's a clip of info I had found ...

The transmission temperature sensor provides input to the TCM. When the temperature sensor reports 30 degrees F or colder, there will be no overdrive, and -50 degrees F, there will be no torque converter clutch. If the transmission fluid temperature sensor reports an overheating condition (over 260 degrees F) and the transmission is currently in overdrive, the TCM will downshift to third gear. The TCM will also light the LED in the dash-mounted OD off switch until the temperature drops below 230 degrees F. However, the torque converter clutch may still be operational.

This system has self-diagnostics. Fault codes can be read with a scan tool or by cycling the ignition key three times, then counting the flashes of the LED in the OD off switch. The diagnostic connector is located inside the vehicle to the left of the center console.

The default mode of the TCM is third gear. Manual shifting of reverse and second gear is possible when in default mode. Default mode happens after a fault code is set.

Code 11 could be the crank position sensor. It is mounted on the passenger side behind the cyl head on the bellhousing. It is held in by 2 allen head bolts. I had a guy here at work with his 97 3.9 do this and he pulled the sensor and found the end full of fine metal shavings. I assume they are from starter/ring gear wear. He wipped the off and it has been fine now for months.

The code 45 could be a bogus code. I don't know if any Dodge van that came through with a transmission temperature sensor. I could be wrong......

Thank you so much to all of you for your help. It is so encouraging to know that complete strangers are willing to take their time to help in today's world. Haven't located the problem yet, but have shared this info with a family member that is way more mechanical than we are. Wouldn't you know that it hasn't been acting up the last several days, but I am sure that next time I go somewhere with all my kids it will leave me stranded again:-)
