Hi all,

I was just informed by Dan Arcand, 'TheFastman', that my transmissions persistent tendancy to hunt in 3rd gear might be due to it needing a 'Transmission Throttle Pressure Adjustment'. Has any one done this ? I'd not really heard it recommended yet --

It appears to be adjusting a cable at the throttle body that sends a signal to your trans telling it to do several key things, like proper: Line pressure, shift timing and kickdown point.

Attached is the pdf document on how to do this - it covers a 1999 Ram Truck with 5.9 but it must cover our vans too - engines and trans are identical.

Curious to hear if you alread knew about performing this procedure

Take Care, David B - Ram Van Man

My '94's cable set-up is just a bit different, but the adjustments are the same. I may try that trick. I hate the early and mushy shifts that my transmission has (A518/46RH).

Dave,

I recently had to adjust the cable from the TB to the tranny on a Honda Civic with 153k miles for a co-worker. The car had a very bad shudder/vibration when the idle dropped below 1k-rpm. We adjusted the cable and added four thick washers. Now the car idles smoothly just a hair over 1k.

My co-worker had the car into three other Honda dealerships and couldn't get it fixed. Honda mentioned that they could not reprogram the electronics for a higher idle. It would then be out of spec and not pass some legal electronic controls. So, I searched the internet and found a Popular Mechanics article that walked us through the repair just for the Honda Civic dealing with the cables. Grant it, it was for a model year three years back for his model, but it still solved the problem.

Thanks for the feedback you guys ! Sounds like we may be 'barking up the right tree' !

Yeah, Ed isn't that a nice pdf Doc that Dan Arcand 'the fastman' sent me ?

I'm getting to be fan of his already - I laid out my trans malfunctions to him, telling him I'd be willing to buy any thing from a TC solenoid to a reworked valve body to a whole built trans, and he replies that it's probably just a simple adjustment - while sending concise instructions. Sounds like a guy who's got the opposite ethics of say, many a transmission shop ! Honest and fair ! Very refreshing !

Stev, good to hear your experience of the same type of adjustment on the Honda - wasn't too hard, eh ? But the dealerships have become mainly 'parts changers' (sad to say), so look what you did, that they couldn't ! Bet your buddy was thrilled at the job - Bravo !

(Stev, I got your email and enjoyed it very much -did ya get mine, too ?)

I'm going to wait until my 'Fastman TB' arrives until I do the TV cable adjustment, because they're right there together - best done at the same time.

I dropped by Harbor Freight today and got an inch-pound torque wrench to do the trans band adjustment - Dan said it was maybe both - TV cable and/or Trans band adjustment, so I'll do 'em both. When done, I'll give a report right here.....stay tuned.

David B.
