I'm considering a 1987 van. It's been taken care of incredibly well, and short of needing a new paint job, is in great shape. It's got ~87k on the odo, and has a block heater installed. My only concern is that the current owner mentioned that it needs a new carb. Also, what kind of situation will I be getting myself into with the suspension?

Putting on a new carburetor isn't a big deal.

What I would do is ask the owner if he/she would allow you to take the van to your mechanic to check it out as suspension work can get expensive. Also depending on your state, a used vehicle must be safety inspected prior to sale or prior to tags and title being issued.

Good luck!

I actually bought an 87 Dodge van (w/ a slant 6) back in the day-
The one I bought had terrible electrical problems. It also overheated on a tour I was doing with my band, we needed a new air pump and some hoses and got layed up in a Mt. Juliet, Tenn. hotel for a couple of days.
This is biased, though, every situation and vehicle is a different story, really.
But that was a shitty tour.
