I have a beautiful '76 with a slant six and a 3-sp column shift. It just revs too high going down the highway. Anybody out there know where I can get a 4-sp floor shifter for this rig?

You may be able to find a donor van in a boneyard. I would venture to say that you could use the transmission and shifter parts from a van all the way up into the 80's.
Another option would be to change your diff. gear ratio to something like a 2.76 or 3.23 gear.

Has anyone install a 5 or 6 speed into a van. Maybe out of a pickup donor? The Shifter location might be a bit distant but you could make a dog leg shifter handle. I drove a factory slant six 4 speed the 4th gear was overdrive think it was a early 80s model. The shifter was just to the right of the seat. http://www.dodgetalk.com/forums/newr...607&noquote=1#

No, but with all of the trans problems people post about here (mainly in the Ram 2nd Gen forum) and the cost to rebuild, that thought has crossed my mind.

My 94 B250 5.2 with 46RH Lasted 50k the first time under warranty then I installed the largest cooled I could find and currently have 75 on the rebuild and just noticed a slight wine noise in 3rd and 0d with light throttle. So I think I will be looking at the 2nd rebuild in the near future hopefully it will carry me to 100k. After the first rebuild I have the shop boost the shift pressure for harder shifting and less slippage and lengthen the shift times this helped as I had my hand on the shifter doing the manual shift all day. I have thought about possibly a 5 sp auto or even a 6 speed stick. Hope you guys are not like me every little sound dives me crazy except the sweet sound of the exhaust and my tires turning to white smoke.

Chambers,
A whine in 3rd and OD is probably rear end bearings. In 3rd none of the planents are active and in OD only the OD planent is active along with the thrust bearings. I installed an 833-OD transmission in my '78 van (4spd OD). I considered a 5 speed, but the shifter location was a consideration and the only Dodge transmission produced at the time was the NP-3550 from a dakota. --B-300-- |

No Definitely coming from the trans my mechanic buddy thinks it is the pump. But I think I will drive it and see what happens. I like fireworks.
What about the CHRYSLER NV4500 5 SPEED TRANSMISSION used in Mid 93 thru 07 Dodge light duty Truck 360/318 notice one on e-bay used. You can make a shifter handle to reach forward or some type of linkage like in a f/w drive car. I wonder if you would have to deal with the computer. Swap from stick truck or program. Chambers,
It looks like it would work if the shifter pointed forward at about the same angle and over towards the driver. Also I see it has a hydraulic clutch which sould simplify the install... Clutch linkage parts are hard to find. It could be the pump or convertor making noise on your auto transmission. --B-300-- |
