I have an '02 dodge ram 1500 5.9l 2wd. Lately when I take the truck from park to reverse or drive is hear a loud cluncking noise from the rear end. I checked all the fluids and they are good. I did not notice any play in the drive shaft but I do have fluid leaks from the tranny bell housing (46re trans). Any idea what is causing the noise and how to fix it? I commute almost 100 miles a day for work and do not want it to go out in the middle of the trip. The truck has 169000 milea on it. Please help!
Our does it too but it does not concern me. I think it is just slack in everything. You could take a look at your U joints and see if they are all tight. That slack/wear that you hear is a non issue running 50-100 MPH down the road.
Don't forget that you have to check the u joints with no load on them, block the wheels and put it in neutral or jack the back wheels off the ground. If you check it in park, a good joint at one end will make you think a bad joint at the other end is good.
It's most likely a u-joint going bad, but it could also be excessive backlash in the differential. With that kind of mileage I wouldn't rule out excessive backlash.
