Third brake light problem

I saw a thread on this about a year ago but didn't think much of it...then it happened to me. You guys know of any fixes for this? Best I can tell, and the dealer can tell, it's not due to water leaking.

-got a message on dash "brake light out". Had someone check and it was third brake light. Message went away, had someone check and it was back on. Then on again, off again. Then burnt out.
-took to dealer for warranty (due to seeing posts about issues), replaced bulb. A week later same thing happened.
-took back to dealer, scraped some light corrosion, added grease, worked for about 4 hours, brake light out, brake light works again.
-took back to dealer and they can't figure it out. They want it back to do some more work and try to figure it out.

I bought used in '15 with 13500 miles. To my knowledge all stock bulbls, no LEDs, nothing that would change draw. Any ideas?
Thanks.

Hi HOGN99,

Definitely sounds like the dealership should so some further digging/diagnostics. If you need me to provide any further assistance and/or follow up with your dealership, let me know in a PM with your VIN.

Thanks, Kori. They want it back for a couple of days, I just have to find time to be without a ride... If they still can't find anything I will definitely let you know.
-On a side note the second time it happened my auto high beams had some issues as well. Not sure if it's related, but the timing was right.

Thanks again for the note. I'll let you know what happens.

The 3rd brake light has been a long time problem for just about all makes and models because of the crappy and super thin gasket around the edge. There's a super long thread on the r a m f o r u m z.com.

Just search for the thread .... Rear brake light water intrusion fix....Pics// by TheMystro. It's worth the read.

I too hate this BS where their site is blocked here on DT and I'm going to look into look into undoing some of these blocked sites. I'd also like to see some of the past DT members come back as well but I do not believe they would come back because of the 'bad blood' in-between the old staff.

.

I started a repair thread for my water leak in the cab and yes, it's from the 3rd brake light. Found a-lot of rust under the paint on the right hand side which has made this easy job into a PITA.

3rd Brake Light... Holy Crap!

Third brake light

Thanks for the info. I found a lot of issues with this light so I personally didn't touch it as it was under warranty. They replaced the entire module at one point and I asked about the water issues - they said the new doesn't have that problem...we'll see. At this point they don't know what the problem is so the water is not an issue.

Update - truck is back in the shop, got a call today that the body control module had a bad positive or negative terminal so the brake light was not getting power. I've seen posts on here about BCM problems, but none relating to third brake light. Anybody heard of this or know anything about it?

Hate to said it but with Fiat running the company..... 'No comment'.

I didn't want to post this too soon, as the first five trips to the shop for this light were unsuccessful - I never made it out of the dealer parking lot before the 'fix' failed. This time, however, I've had the truck back almost two weeks, put more than a few hundred miles on it, it's been through rain, snow, and ice, weather in the teens and the 60s...and everything still works! The BCM was replaced due to a faulty terminal and that seems to have done the trick.
Kori - thank you so much for tracking this issue for me and helping me get it looked at! I am starting to get used to my truck not 'dinging' at me everytime I step on the brake pedal.

My Third Brake Light

We just bought a '161500 Big Horn, same thing, third brake light. covered under warranty but irt sounds like a real hassle. This one is an LED, only dealer serviceable, according to the manual. Gonna check that other thread.
