I could not get the lower steering coupler off. I removed the 1/4" diameter roll pin (that attaches the coupling to the gear box), but still don't have enough clearance. What else do I have to remove?
There is a small shaft immediately above the coupling, does this have to be removed.
What the trick? My service manual does not have this detail.
I'll see if I can have this TSB as an attachment to maybe help you out???
Terry
Did the dealer you got the parts from say anything about a TSB 18-05-93 when searching for you?? This TSB I wanted to have for you gives instructions how to put it together I thought it might help you!! E-Mail me and I'll see if I can figure out how to send in a mail???
Sorry I failed, I am Brain Damaged!!
yeah i ended up having to remove the whole column but silly me put the shaft in the cupler wrong and now my steering wheel is upside down. tomarrow i will remove the steering wheel and set it right. but the steering is now tight as a sports car.
Ok... there seem's to be slack in that. Probably because of that sliced rubber that should be keeping dust 'n' stuff away from that coupler joint. Can the coupler be repaired or should it be replaced with new one?
It has to be replaced. I've never replaced one though. Do you have a Chrysler dealer near you? That's where you'll need to order the part or www.makeitmopar.com

The fellow that runs that website is a guy named Damon. Why don't you email him with your van's info. (apparently there's a difference between couplers depending whether or not you have tilt wheel) and he might be able to get you a part number. Take the part number to your local Chrysler dealer. It may end up being cheaper that way.
Hi, I quoted another post to give you an idea what I am after.
I desperately need ansers as I am not able to get the coupler out
I have been down for almost a month.
I am trying to replace the steering coupler on my 1985 dodge van B250. I have the column apart. I noticed the quote above but don't know where this 1/4 inch pin is located. or how to detached it Is it possible that you could tell me step by step how to get the coupler out. I really had no business taking this apart because I am finding out how mechanically challenged I really am

The pin will be down where the coupler attaches to the steering box. You'll need a drift and hammer to knock the roll pin out. Then you can remove the entire column from the van and work on replacing the coupler on a work bench or something. This is for a non-tilt column.
A tilt column will have a clamp bolt and locknut attaching the column to the steering box.
I think I understand and see the clamp that you are talking about( tilt wheel ) I have taken the bolt out of the clamp, the clamp swivels without any restriction now. the part that disconnects from the rest of the column above the coupler is disconnected also but I cannot pull it out, something seems to be holding it in, I mean there is no give at all like you would have if it were stuck from rust. I noticed in the new coupler I bought there is a tiny hole through the middle of it, would that be for lubricant, I noticed there is a lot of grease in the old one that is still connected ( inside the rubber boot that is ripped )
WoW how frustrating this is. Any other ideas as to why this coupler wont come out ?......Does the coupler have to be sitting a certain way or position to come out
Pull the carpet up from the floor at the base of the column and you'll see 3 (or 4) large bolts or philips-head screws holding the column to the floor board. You'll need to remove these bolts/screws.

This is what I have done
1. unscrewed bolt just above the coupler
2. unscrewed bold on collar just below coupler ( collar swivels loosely
3. unscrewed bolts in floor board
4. detached shifting lever indicator
5. unscrewed the two screws holding the column to the dash( steering wheel now moves freely )
6. Pulled steering wheel up to disconnect top part of column just above the coupler.
The column is now in two sections however I cannot disconnect the coupler from the steering box, the coupler will not pull out and there is no give. I am not able to see what is holding it. I was thinking maybe the part ( the bottom of the coupler where the splines are) need to be in a certain position. I noticed in the new coupler there is a tiny hole in the middle of it where maybe there is a small something or other that fits through the middle and attachés to something toward the bottom. I just don't know, it's driving me crazy. Seems like I have done everything that everyone has told me to do and the coupler just doesn't come out
Any other ideas would be greatly and most definitely be appreciated
You might try lifting the front wheels off the ground just enough so you can turn the wheels from side to side and see if that relieves the bind on the coupler.

Thank you, your suggestion is appreciated
I will try that.
Also if I may ask, when buying the coupler all I received was the upside down shaped
bell ( coupler ? ) am I suppose to take the rubber boot off the old one that is ripped ? and put it on the new coupler or should I have received a new rubber boot boot with the new coupler
Just to make sure cause I don't want to break anything, I'm sure you read what I have done to this point ?
I won't break anything trying to pry off with a pry bar or large screwdriver ?.....Can you tell me what kind of a connection I'm trying to get apart, I just don't have a concept of what the connection is IE: male splines fitting onto female splines or a small pin with a ball like top and the other fitting fits over it and just pulls apart with pressure. I just don't know what I'm trying to get apart, I think if I knew I could go about getting it apart with more confidence
That's exactly what it is. That coupler has been attached to the steering box for a long time. Removing the roll pin will "unlock" the coupler from the box, but you gotta give it a bit of persuasion to pop it off.

where is the roll pin ? I have a tilt wheel does that make a difference about the roll pin ?
I guess while I am at it, I should probably ask you what is the cause of the loose steering. I was told by a mopar fellow in passing all I had to do was replace ( he pointed to the coupler body ) and my steering would be as tight as new, that is what started all this. I thought the coupler body was all I needed. I bought the coupler body here
I received it about two weeks ago. To me it looks used. I called and spoke to the gal on the phone, she said it could be used but it might look the way it does because of protective grease. She ask me to take it to a dealer and ask if it is new or used. Actually I don't care if it is new or used as long as I needed it and it works ( makes my steering tight )
Do you need the new coupler body to make it tight ? or is there another component that actually causes the steering to tighten up. Cause if it is something else that tightens the steering I will send this used looking part back to them.
Ooops, that's right you have the lock bolt, not the pin. Disregard what I said as far as the pin goes, but you'll still need something to pop the coupler up off the steering box.
I don't know about the boot, but it couldn't hurt to spray some penetrating oil on the splines of the steering box shaft and coupler since it sets under the battery and can get a little rusty.
