I'm looking at a '14 Outdoorsman that's a pretty good price. My main reasoning is to get the 8 speed since I have the 6-speed in my '13.
Is it worth the trade? The '14 has some other options I don't like the back up camera, heated seats/wheel, and 3.92s....I just can't decide if I woul really gain anything other than getting 8k miles back down on the odometer.
Everything that I've read, all the reviews, and DT members here have had nothing but glowing remarks for the new transmission. Personally, I cannot wait to get my next truck!
I went from a 2010 5 speed to the 2014 with the 8 speed.
Definitely an upgrade. much better transmission.
The 2010 was a 5 speed with 2 different second gears, your transmission uses both those gears in the normal upshifting, so it is a 6 speed.
Increased gas mileage in the 2014, (both trucks were 4x4, CC, 3.92 axles) Ratings went from 13-18 in the 2010, to 15-21 in the 2014.
It is your call on the final decision.
I traded my '12 Outdoorsman for a '14 Sport. I like the 8spd, but I don't know if I'd say it's worth trading the truck for. Now all the other bells and whistles, new start on the odometer, plus the 8 spd may be worth it. I don't regret trading my '12, so I suspect you'll probably be happy. The only thing that upsets me about having traded my '12 in is that my bed cover doesn't fit the new truck (it's got the tiny bed) so I need to spend another $700 to get a new cover. That has nothing to do with the trade, just pointing out that the only negative I've seen so far in trading was that I have to buy all new mods.
You will take a huge hit on your 13 trading it off so soon. I would recommend keeping it another year or probably two before you consider trading it. JMHO
Depends how much equity you have in your truck. If I didn't get such a smoking deal on my '11, I probably wouldn't have traded. Bought my '11 in Nov 2011, traded with about $7K equity and bought my '14 in Nov 2013.
Went from a Big Horn to a Sport 8 Spd/3.92 and it is friggin awesome.
Thanks for all the input. I'll probably go drive one to see if it really seems any different. If it looks like I'm going to lose $ trading in my '13, maybe I'll wait another year and see how the ecodiesel has held up after more people get some miles on that motor.
The 8speed is far superior to the 6 or 5 speed. You can read countless reviews praising it. It really does make it more enjoyable to drive.
But if its worth it is going to be a relative term. How bad do you want the added performance and better operation? Bad enough to take a hit to the wallet?
I went and drove a '14 EcoDiesel today with the 8-speed. The 8-speed is sweet, and I decided if I trade up I'll go with an ecodiesel rather than trade Hemis for only that transmission. Supposedly they aren't giving as many rebates on the EcoDiesel due to demand, which is understandable. But after I told the sales guy I was only looking because of end of year rebates, he tried to throw me a line that Chrysler probably won't have any rebates on the EcoDiesel on '15s next year and the price will probably go up due to the demand. As soon as he started with that tactic to try to get me to buy today, I said thanks for your time and headed out the door.
Yeah, good call. Try that high pressure crap on me and I'm out the door too. If people don't buy cars/trucks, they don't stay in business. So the dealership needs to sell the truck more than you need to buy it (especially when you're trading one in).
I also always like, once you've made a deal, they say "we just need a $100 deposit to show you're serious". How about this.... I'm here, I made a deal, I'm serious. If that's not enough for you to get your papers in order to close the deal, I'll go elsewhere. Shady freaking tactic to try to milk an extra $100 out of you. Needless to say I've never gone back to any dealership that's tried that garbage. Heck the dealership I've used on my recent purchases doesn't even make me put a deposit down when I order a car/truck. I assume because I've used them so many times now, that they know I'm coming back to pick it up when it comes in.
There are some dealerships that do not link the salesman pay to what they sell. Those dealership pay an hour wage to the sales staff and that cuts the pressure sale BS right out.
I wish there was a dealership like that close to me. Definitely impressed with the EcoDiesel, so if I can't find one this year, I am really hoping I can track one down with rebate incentives next year.
Yeah, I considered the diesel 1500, but I don't drive near enough miles. I'm told diesels like to move, so sitting for the long periods of time like my truck does wasn't exactly ideal. I like the idea of having all that torque though. If I drove more, it certainly would have been a consideration, because it is impressive.
When I bought my truck, it was as a secondary vehicle. A couple months later, I totalled my commuter car so it became my daily driver. Now, I've changed jobs and will be commuting about 150 miles a day. If I had known that when I started, I would have waited for the EcoDiesel for sure!
Good luck finding one and getting the deal you want!
I hear you! I've been trying to test drive an ecoD in the trim level I'd like to order around the first of the year but they leave the lots faster than donuts at a Weight Watches meeting.
IMHO, the 8-spd trans makes the truck. I can't believe the difference between this one and my 12.
AND I thought I would never want something like a heated steering wheel, but it is really nice and makes my hands feel better on these cold days after working on robots and presses all day.
The 8.speed makes the truck for me. There is no question if you will take a beating on trading. The only question is how much of a beating are you going to take. I see so many people trading in year old trucks in these forums. I personally don't get it. I would keep it a minimum of 3 years.
2014 hemi QC 8-speed 3.92 gears 4x4, i could never go back to my 2010 after buying this truck
