I have an '04 Durango ST, pretty bare bones. In the middle of the dash, under the radio, I have a power outlet on the right (actually a cigarette lighter socket, and it turns off when ignition is turned off). It has a 3-prong socket. On the left, I have another hole that is capped, smaller in diameter than the cig lighter hole. It has a 2-prong socket plugged into the back of it with a constant 12 volts, even when car is off. What is or what can that be used for?
did ya know the power outlet in the console and in the rear storage area, by default have power all the time, but there's a fuse in the junction box behind the driver kick panel, if you move it 1/2 a spot (I can't remember if it's up or down, I'd have to look again) you can make it only powered when the key is on
did not know that, but good to know for future. I love that we have three power outlets on these rigs without having to alter anything. Always have my GPS plugged into my lower center console so its always charged if I need it. Use the rear port to pump up mattresses for camping. So convenient.
Wow, I've never pored over a wiring diagram for more than a few minutes, kudos to you! Original poster, that other outlet/circle is indeed for the Traction Control option. It was a $200 option when new if my memory serves me. I too appreciate the number of outlets on our D's. Now if I only had the power liftgate and second row captain's chairs that became available later on in the production run of our D's I'd be super stoked.
My D has an electrical gremlin that makes no sense.... hense the 14hours... In about 2 hours I'll be looking at rams.. just so see all my options... grrrrr
Hell, if you get a 4 door Ram and get a toolbox for the bed, or even a tonneau cover, you're basically at the same place you are with your Durango as far as cargo, etc.
Mine had a blank where the ESP switch should have been. Wiring for the ESP switch was there but it was plugged into the back of the blank plug. I found an ESP switch at a salvage yard and installed it, but it did nothing. Not programmed in to the ECU I guess. Anyway, I also bought a 2nd power outlet and installed it into the blank. A step drill, some epoxy, plus a little bit of wiring, and now I have TWO power outlets now. Looks totally OEM.
Looks great! Like he said in his post accompanying the pic, he first attempted to hook up a salvaged Traction Control (ESP) switch he sourced w/ no luck so he went the dueling outlet route. Very clean install.
I noticed this Traction Control spot as well, and I too installed a second outlet. HOWEVER, i tried to cut the plug from the traction control and use that power source to power the outlet. It would not charge my iPhone.
I know next to nothing about electronics and but ran a multimeter on it and noticed it was powered with the key off, which I wanted. It was running like .5 less volts than the stock one but still over the 12v needed, or so i thought 12.1 vs 12.6 IIRC.
Does anyone know why this doesn't work. Links to Electronics for Dummies are anticipated haha.
If this is just a shithead idea, can I splice into the stock one without any hassle? Should I upgrade the fuse?
Mine is spliced into the stock one. Solder and heat shrink on all joints. Works like a champ. Same fuse.
If you get a power outlet from the junkyard, cut the plug from the truck's harness and splice that in for an 'almost factory' looking wire harness.
I noticed the ESP plug was powered as well, but I don't know where the other ends of the wires go. So I zip-tied the ESP plug back to the harness so it wouldn't rattle around inside the console.
I don't like those blank holes... constant reminder that I couldn't find a better-optioned truck.
