hey guys i have a 1997 dodge ram1500 cargo van with 60k miles . im hearing that famous " rattling /lifter type noise" coming from front timing chain cover as far as can locate it with sthetoscope . wanting to replace the timing chain kit .. has anybody gotten one of this kits and from where .. i tried ebay could not locate one .. hate to go dealer maybe only option !!! :rck:
I bought a Pro something brand chain set from Hughes engines. Not cheap, but I'll have it in my next three engines.
I also installed the chain tensioner for a 3.9 V6 (just a Magnum V8 with two cylinders lopped off). Hughes sells the tensioner, but it's much cheaper through RockAuto and the same manufacturer.
My 93 5.2 has a plug in the timing cover that lets you stick a screwdriver in to wiggle the chain and check for play. It's left of centre about half way between the crank and cam. A lot easier to get at than pulling the water pump for a looksee.
That said Magnums use a long chain and stretch them quickly.
Do the high quality timing set and tensioner and forget about it. Do the water pump and fan clutch too.
I would stay away from tensioners, I tore down a motor that had one and the chain wore down to the metal of the tentioner. Metal to metal contact is not good.
thanks guys .. great advice Pnty.. I'm going to look for plug on my.. also years ago I remember buying t-chain for 97 truck ram 1500 from hughes engines . and yea! I think I m going to put in a tensioner according to dodge TSB #09-07-97 they recommend a tensioner when replacing the timing chain
That TSB is for the V-6. I think it is a great idea for all of them. Don't forget to junk the chain oil tab and the thrust plate. Grease up the face of the tensioner too. Soak the chain in a bag of oil.
yea i have a v6 thanks i will look for those things . thanks for giving me that tip . didnt know that i should that !
