Does anyone have any links to a diagram showing the breakdown of a steering column? I've finally narrowed down a chirping noise I have to the steering column. I can grab the linkage on the engine side of the firewall and it goes away or I can grab what looks like a heat shield on the column under the dash and it goes away. I assume there is a bushing of some kind that the column rides on that may be causing this sound but I don't know without seeing a diagram. My Chilton manual doesn't show anything. I've read another thread where one guy sprayed lubricant through the firewall to stop this same type of noise but I'm wondering if something needs to be replaced.
This is from my fsm for my 1999 Ram. There don't appear to be any bushings. There is a PRNDL calbe on column shift vehicles that use a cable retainer that is tabbed. Could that be moving? Or possibly the wiring harness?
According to the fsm there really isn't anything at the firewall. Only the toe plate. Higher up there are the lock housing shrouds, the tilt lever (if equipped) and the PRNDL calbe.
Here's a diagram that I hope may help.
Hey Dodge Okie, my 1997 Ram 4x4 Diesel has the same exact steering column rattle - two guys over at the TDR forums say it's the 'lower steering column bushing' a cheap plastic piece at the bottom end - it's hidden inside - my entire column is out and I'm waiting for some input from them on how to disassemble it further - you can PM me here if you want a bit later and I'll link you to any solutions I discover on the TDR site, OK ?

Thanks but mine ended up being some worn out grommets on the shift linkage that was sending a vibration and noise up the steering column. A little bit of grease solved the problem for now but the grommets will have to be replaced at some point. You might check yours out to see if it is the same problem.
