"Wallace Leads Five Dodge Drivers in Top 10; Elliott, McMurray Score Top-Five Finishes
FONTANA, Calif. (April 28, 2003) - Rusty Wallace, driving the No. 2 Miller Lite Dodge Intrepid, led the way Sunday as five Dodge drivers scored top-10 finishes in the Auto Club 500 NASCAR Winston Cup race at California Speedway.
Wallace, who won his last race at California Speedway two years and 72 starts ago, led once for 29 laps before finishing third. Bill Elliott finished fourth for the second straight year at California Speedway in the No. 9 Dodge Dealers/UAW Intrepid. Elliott led once for 12 laps, while Raybestos Rookie of the Year contender Jamie McMurray finished fifth in the No. 42 Havoline Dodge after leading three times for 26 laps.
John Andretti finished eighth in the No. 43 Cheerios Dodge Intrepid, scoring his first top-10 finish since last year at Sonoma, and Sterling Marlin ended up 10th in the No. 40 Coors Light Dodge Intrepid. Marlin has recorded three straight top-10 finishes and four in the past five races.
Wallace and McMurray made the biggest gains in the NASCAR Winston Cup point standings. Wallace, who recorded his first top-five finish of the season, jumped four spots to 12th, while McMurray leaped six positions to 24th.
It was the first time this season five Dodge drivers have finished in the top 10. This year's previous best overall performance by the Dodge teams came two weeks ago at Martinsville when three Dodges finished in the top 10.
Kurt Busch won Sunday’s race in a Ford, becoming the first repeat winner of the season. Bobby Labonte finished second in his Chevrolet. Ford regained the advantage in the manufacturers standings after 10 races with four wins and 69 points. Chevy is second with four wins and 67 points. Dodge ranks third with one victory and 43 points, while Pontiac has one win and 41 points.
