So everything works.. sorta. The fan speed selector in the dash only works on hi and no other position. What could be causing this, the selector itself or some other part? Also, on hard acceleration, the vents always change from their settings to 100% defrost. I know this a vacuum issue but coming from where?
The vacuum leak is harder to track down but for me, it has always been one of the check valves on the passenger side of the engine near the firewall. Trace the vacuum lines to a T and you'll see little plastic connectors. These are the check valves. One is against the manifold and one near the firewall. Mopar doesn't sell these anymore but Napa does. Other stores just have generic valves that will need new lines and some hacking. But the leak could also be a vacuum line but if everything looks okay, try the valves.
The fan motor resistor is shot causing only one speed for the fan. Under the dash on the passenger side, lay on your back and look up near the fan motor. There's a little white and black rectangle piece with two screws. Just R and R that piece. Search any parts store for "fan motor resistor." Good luck!
I have a 97 Ram that had the same problem with the fan. However, the problem wasn't the blower motor resistor, which is usually the problem (according to all the internet forums)--it was a short in the wire gong to the fan. There is a metal clip that holds the 2 wires going into the fan, and it had worn through the insulation and shorted the wire. A little electrical tape fixed the problem (after I replaced the resistor, without result, which took about five minutes. A short screwdriver was the only tool needed. The clip is on the bottom of the fan, which is all the way over on the right side of the passenger footwell, right up under the dash and easy to access.

There is a vacuum check valve available from mopar. I have purchased two in the past two weeks. One to fix a vacuum issue in the vent doors and the other to replace the original at the manifold. Both are the same. The part number and diagram to fix the vent issue are in another thread here. Search for "wild vents". The problem I had with the mopar parts is that the dealer did not have appropriate vacuum lines to insert part. It took a trip to AutoZone and zip ties to stop vacuum leak at check valve. Keep in mind you may have other vacuum leaks which may be a problem too.
ALSO, on the selector switch, I got one of those off of eBay.
