Did someone know how kickdown works on our trucks?? 2005 1500 5.7 83000 mls.
When i climb a hill starting from a low gear it shifts normally, but if become stepper and don't push on gas peda,lt have difficult to downshift ,engine seems that runs very rich and have difficult to raise on rpm, like towing something too heavy. trans oil level is ok and oil is clear and not smell burnt, exhaust is ok no clogged cats. any idea?
Thanks
Nah thats pretty normal.
Just the dreadful shift program in our trucks.
If im climbing a steep hill, my truck will stay in a high gear. it then takes a mighty stab deep into the accelerator pedal, before the truck kicks down.
Then it takes off like a scolded cat.
There seems to be no nice inbetween if you know what I mean.
Ive heard that a programmer helps but seeing as though my 03 has a seperate TCM, i cant change the shift points as theres no programmer out there for me At the moment so i cant comment on that.
Someone will chime in on that.
But what I do have is no torque management. Being an 03 i can delete that and promptly did lol
Al.
Hi Al sry for the delay answering,
Yes what you told is happening to me also, and the double downshift, if i floor the pedal with the flowmaster series 40 and dual ext, let some people hating me when is 7.00 am and i'm going to work lol.
seems that one option is an upgraded valvebody or a fully rebuild and upgraded tranny but is around 3500 usd if i remember,
Not sure if a tuner will solve, but the ones with shifpoint tuning are more than 300 usd.
Also not sure if a booster like the sonnax is a good option, saw many have it but not talked to someone that have it for more than few months.
For the moment was trying to understand if mine is running well or if i've to ceck for some easy fix (vacuum leaks or other...)
Sounds like its just a normal Dodge transmission teo.m
Make sure you do not kick down into second prime when you floor your truck.
At about 50mph if you stab the accelerator, the transmission changes gear into second prime.... And no. Not a transformers replacement leader lol.
We have two second gears in the 545rfe auto boxes.
Second prime is a known weak link and will pop if you have a heavy foot.
If you plan on downshifting, click the od/tow haul switch off and or move the gear selector into 2nd.
This stops the truck defaulting into second prime and stops the known burned/popped clutch pack issue.
I understand this is all a royal pain in the a** but, it saves on expensive auto box repairs.

A SuperChips with a shift schedule sounds like what you need!
Search this site for that. There is a huge thread for this.
I did this on my 2007 2500 Hemi, it felt like I gain 100HP just from the shift schedule.
Going to Flagstaff from Phoenix, you climb a huge grade. 1K to 8K feel.. my truck hated it.
I did the schedule and the next time I went up north, I was racing up those hills like you wouldn't believe. It was like driving another truck. Instead of heavy footed and going slow, I was barely in the pedal and going 70mph up this hill.
I will say I was sold on the shift schedule for sure!
But you'll need to know what you're doing with it so research and research. Some great resources on here for this.
Thanks Mike I'll look around about the superchip and the shifting schedule :drivingz:
Al, usually i forget to have the tow haul switch, and have a light foot i drive it like a bus.... let it raise rpm quitely, but sometimes i notice a retard in downshifting than i expected, and like you said if i floor a little more have the "scolded cat" effect .
Was not informed about the 2nd gear (seems you know a lot abt) where may i read something technical about the transmission??
If you don't mind, could tell me how works for you your plugs? cause i've mine converted to lpg too,now i'm running copper champions but the lpg guy said that stoch have too much gap,so i ordered ngk iridium,i'll change them when will solve the problem with the lpg pump, just finished to drop the tank.
Matteo.
Hi.
I use these NGK Iridium IX LZTR4AIX-11.
I use the gaps straight from the box they come in with no issues.
I usually change them out around the 40 thousand mile mark.
They show no excessive wear etc and Ive never had an issue in my Hemi running LPG with these plugs.
As for technical details about the 545RFE auto transmission, I'll have to have a look around and get back to you.
Al.
