My ABS and brake light illuminate with the others on startup, then go out with others, then relight before the air bag light even goes out. Sometimes acommpanied with a chime, sometimes not. Does that mean there is a problem? Would it throw a code if there was? Also I have noticed in some situations it seemed like the ABS should engage and it didnt feel like it. Does a light illuminate when ABS is engage, my old car had a Low Trac light, I was jsut wondering if durangos had any such light.
My 03 Ram 2500 does the same thing. When the service dept checked it out they claimed the CAB controller was losing the VIN # verification so they replaced the CAB controller. Needless to say that didn't fix the problem and they are still searching for the answer. They did say that the ABS should still function with this particular malfunction.
It is normal for the lamps to illuminate on startup. Do a search on ABS, Brake light, speed sensor. It is very, very , very common for the sensor to go bad. No the ABS light does not come on when it activates. If a fault is sensed with the ABS that illuminates the dash lamp. When a fault is present, the ABS is deactivated and will not be on. No code can be read. The code is stored in the CAB and will not trigger the check engine lamp nor can the CAB code be read by an OBD II scanner.
have a 2004 Ram 1500 SLT 4x4 with similar issue. ABS Light and Brake light on dash illuminates periodcially and speedo dances around like crazy when vehicle is at complete stop but functions normally and registers speed while driving. Took truck to dealer this morning and they called later saying it wasn't the speed sensor but instead it was a faulty ABS Module. I will update once I pick up vehicle and check myself.
Hummmmm, that still sounds like the speed sensor. The sensor in the differental is the ABS / speed sensor. It feeds the speedometer and the ABS system for axle stopping during braking. Problems with both the speedo and ABS lights usually mean that sensor is the problem.
had same issue with '04 Ram SLT 4x4. ABS and Brake light would come on dash periodically while driving. Speedo also went crazy when foot on brake. Took to dealer yesterday and they replaced Rear ABS Speed Sensor and ABS module. They also drained and inspected rear diff and then resealed and filled it. Drove the 25 miles from dealer tonight with no lights or issues. Hopefully it is fixed.

My work was covered under warranty but I saw the price of $450 on the paper work but that is mostly labor I'm sure! They also drained and inspected the rear diff because sometimes if diff gears are grinding and alot of metal is in the oil, it will screw up the sensor. I recommend if you do the work yourself that you also check your rear diff by draining it and looking for excessive metal shavings on the magnetized drain plug. The sensor price seems to vary by dealership so call around for lowest price. Not sure on the ABS Module price?? I drove 45 miles to work this morning and no issues so far.
Had the speed sensor problem too on my 2000 Durango. The cost for the and labor was not close to $450...can't remember - I am thinking around $100 - it was last year.
Also, when I would drive under 30 MPH the spedometer did not function...
So far, you escaped the wrath of the Parrot, but that now ends. Ya NEED to fill out your signature, it helps people to answer your questions when ya ask them. Also, It saves ya from writting down all that info everytime ya do ask questions. Ya do that thru the control panel. Whew. Oh lmkeck, are you forgetting something?
It's definitely on top of the differential, so you don't have to remove the cover if you don't want to. Not too hard to take off and replace at all. Make sure the one you get is from the dealer, not Autozone or Advance. Those two stores don't carry the right part. Should cost you $35 or less.
The differential gear lube is 75W90 weight. You'll need three quarts (it holds around 2 1/2 I believe). Synthetic would be an excellent choice. Just make sure you have some RTV sealant when replacing it and also be sure to wipe off the magnetic collector. ( BTW, now would be a great time to pick up a chrome rear differential cover )
It's definately the front wheel abs sensor. I had the same exact problem, changed the rear sensor and lights were still on, changed the front sensor and it's prefect.
any garage with a snap on scan tool can pull abs codes. they can also road test and watch wheel speed data. BEFORE heading to any shop i would visually inspect sensor wires near front hubs. look for any break in either of the two wires as they run up the control arm. breaks can occur from years of turning, yanks from offroading , ice and snow build up or chaffing. if break found, wire strip, butt connect and shrink wrap(these particular wires do not like to be soldered). from experience, more often than not the right front wires tend to break(don't ask me why). if a break is found and repaired, go start vehicle. abs will self test. light MAY go out if that was the only problem detected. some time with an ohmmeter could rule out wiring from each sensor to module but why waste any more time. if its not obvious,go get the codes pulled.
