I'd like to get some info on what other CTD owners are getting for milage on their trucks. My '05 is still pretty new with no mods as of yet and only about 2500 miles. The first tank averaged 14.4 mpg with mostly in town driving and my last two tanks were both 14.7 mpg driving 80 mph on the freeway the entire time. Obviously dropping the speed to ~60 mph will boost the milage some, but who has time for that!
What I'd like to see are: 1) The year of your CTD 2) The milage before any mods 3) Milage after each mod 4) After how many miles did you notice the engine break in (and how much towing was done) 5) The milage increase after engine break in.
I often see posts of guys saying they are getting great gas milage, but is that nursing it down the road going 60 mph with a tail wind or is that running 80 mph on the freeway? I really do love the truck, but I was anticipating a little bit better milage.
I have a 2004.5 2500 600 CTD/QC/4x4/LWB/6 speed/3.73's 22k miles. I bought it used with about 18k miles. I don't really know how the previous owner treated it, but I'm guessing it pulled some pretty heavy loads based on the gooseneck hitch and tire wear that it had when I bought it.
I just checked my most recent tank and hand calculated to 18.62 mpg and the overhead said 16.5 mpg. I filled up the tank to the top of the filler neck for both tanks to make sure I was getting an accurate read. This particular tank was about 80% hiway, cruise set at 70, the rest in town with a pretty light foot. My tach reads just a hair above 2k cruising at 70.
Does anybody in here have any experience with the Rokktech adjustable timining sensor? I've read about this on another forum and folks are claiming 1 to 3 mpg increase.
Sell it for a 98 24valve! JK... Your truck needs to be broken in (30k+), don't get discouraged. I saw a 94 in a trader mag once with 400,000 miles on it and it was still being sold for 4500 green ones. Your 14.4 is still better than my 13.996 average.
I have a 2005 QC 4x4 that is lifted a few inches and has 35" Toyo M/T tires on 20x10 wheels. After 5000 miles, I am still averaging around 15 - 16 in mixed driving. I'm hoping to get it up to the 18 mpg range after 10 or 20K miles, but I realize my lift and tire size are not great for fuel economy.
Once I changed out the muffler (to a Magnaflow), I saw no real gain in mileage, but I think i was on the throttle alot more often (LOVE THE SOUND!!!).
I thought I had a 3.73 but now I'm starting to wonder. I checked the original window sticker and it doesn't say. Is there a code or number stamped on it somewhere that I can use to tell for sure (other than jacking up the rear and rotating a tire and checking the drive shaft rotation...sounds like a pain in the ass)? I'll be making another long trip this weekend with some lower speed driving so I'll see what she gets averaging in the 60-70 mph range.
really...that is strange! I wonder if it came off?
Maybe someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but if your sticker doesn't show an extra charge for 4.10's, then I would guess you have the 3.73's.
12,200 miles. 4x4, Quad Cab, 3.73's, auto. I don't drive it super hard, but it's hard with all of that torque!
Highway at 60 MPH I get just a hint over 20 MPG according to my overhead display. Pulling my 12' trailer with about 1,800 lbs. of lawn equipment around town, on the highway at 60 MPH, and around town driving with some rural driving without my trailer mixed in, I get right at 13 MPG.
2005 quad swb auto 4.10s. New I was getting around 15 - 17 mpg around town and maybe 15 on the highway at 75 - 80. I know have 16k for miles and was getting around 18 - 20 around town and got solid 19 on trip from VT - NC and back at 75 mph. After modding the Crank Tone ring the other night, getting about 22 - 23 mpg around town and haven't checked the highway yet. Haven't really gone through a FULL tank of fuel yet either. But I feel more power off idle and it seems to be getting better mpg. Not bad for a 20 minute FREE mod.
Mod was about the same that the ROKKAR (sp?) does with their sensor, advances the timing a 2*.

I think it all depends on how heavy your right foot is. I usually get about 14-15 with mixed driving and high 15's with more freeway. But brand new she was getting like 12. I have 3.73's and 35" tires

Actually Hemifreak, it says my truck dyno'd 319 HP with 33" meats. I haven't dyno'd the truck with the 315x70R17 (metric for 35x12R17 or close enough)tires yet. But No, I haven't gotten around to taking some good pics yet of the new tires and wheels.
Have 05 3500 dually a lot of heavy pulling 40' toy box 5th wheel about 16000 without 4 wheelers. I pull a lot of 8% grades living in the basin in Utah. I am now getting 18.5 empty 12.1 with 5th wheel and about 15.7 with my 18' enclosed bumper pull. 3.73 rear with new 6 speed manual. Only have 11,000 on truck but big fuel milage change around 7,000. Started pulling 5th wheel after 750 miles, most miles put on with the 5th wheel. this is my 3rd dodge diesel. I had a 99 2500 quad cab put 150000 on it before the transmission became to weak to pull with. I did get about 24 mpg on hi way with larger tires and edge mod. also 4" exhaust and compression brake. moved to an 03 quad cab and only got around 19 on the hi way. auto trans wouldn't handle the 5th wheel couldn't put compression brake on and keep warranty.
3.73 gear '03 HO CTD 4x4 Quad Cab with 43,000 miles on it.
No noticeable change after straight piping it. I drive it like I stole it most of the time and get around 17, no highway driving, in hill country and doing some idling with the A/C on. I once checked the mileage on a road trip and setting cruise control at 60 mph. It was around 21mpg.
