I have a 2002 Dodge Ram 1500 5.9 I've been noticing that it's been leaking coolant. I haven't found where it's leaking from. But inside my radiator cap there's a build up of some red colored gunk. Does anybody know what this stuff is. I've cleaned it off the cap once. I just did again.
someone mixed in gm red silicone base coolant with the glycol type your supposed to have.
yup! instant pudding.
also don't mix silicone dot5 brake fluid with dot3/4 petroleum.
Gross.
Yes flushing lots of flushing
Might of had stop leak added to it as well. Seem to remember it looking like that.
Hope not though.
Wheres it leaving puddles?
Believe I would pull the t-stat then do an acid flush on the system. Then flushing the system real good making sure everything inside clear. Double check for leaks and then reinstall a new t-stat before filling with new anti-freeze and bottled water.
I own a 2008 Dodge Ram 5.7 hemi 4x4 48k. My problem is I've changed the water pump, tstat, fan clutch, and a radiator flush and I'm still having issues when I get on the highway the truck starts to overheat not when I'm idling but when I'm on the highway only thing that's left is the radiator could that be the source of the problem?
WOw that is bad, IF this was my truck Id flush it a lot with water and a treatment or 2 of some sort flush treatment. I would then replace the thermostat and then the water pump if it is leaking, I would not replace these parts untill I did a lot of good flushing.
CLR is a chemical that could be used watered down a bit to flush the system. just introduce it to the rad and let the system heat to capacity. then just drop as much fluid as possible, including dropping the block plug.
penray is a good flush and pyroil also both could be run for a week, then flush and fill.
oh. hey, and vinegar. that could be introduced to the rad and run for a day.
my cooling system takes about 3 gallons to fill completely.
Thanks everyone for all the advice I'll definitely be cleaning the hell out of it lol. It just sucks that somebody would let the truck get like this. I've had to do a lot to this truck to make it presentable. The previous two owners never took care of it or even washed the truck.
do your self a favor. take out the 195 stat put in a 180 and drill a 1/8th bypass hole in the flange area. this allows pressure equilibrium within the rad during warm up. the hole better to allow the rad to purge air bubbles. and rams run better at 180.. the heater core gets bound up with bubbles.
Yeah this is just what I've found in it when I went to check my coolant.
