oil pressure drops and "check gages" light comes on when coming to a stop

99 durango 5.2L about 175k miles

it doesnt happen 100% of the time but id say about 80-85% of the time lately, its been becoming more and more frequent when i come to a stop just a second before coming to a complete stop the oil pressure will drop to 0 and the "check gages" light will come on. then a second or 2 later it will go back up to normal.

once or twice its happend thru a turn too.. but thats rare.

im coming up on 3k miles since my last oil change, so its due for one.

does this sound like maybe a low oil issue (been meaning to check the oil level) or something else? maybe a sensor?

whats worrying me is i bought this durango cause the engine in my 98 expedition went out and it was doing the same exact thing about a month before the engine went and less than a week after doing an oil change on it.

anyone??

Sounds like main bearings. First, I'd rule out the pump and get it checked.

So you guys would rule out the oil pressure sending unit and go to the extreme first? Basically the same thing happened in my durango and it was the oil pressure sending unit. Everyone on here was telling me that the oil pump pickup was clogged but all it was was the sensor. Check your oil pressure with another gage first!

it is at pretty high miles so it could really be either one.. but i agree i'd throw a manual gauge on there real quick and watch it.. if it happens with the manual gauge then you know its not the sensor.. then you get to start tearin into the engine. in which case you get a new oil pump and while the pan is off check the main bearings to see how they look.

do you hear any change in the sound of the engine when the pressure drops to 0? cause if you do then i'd say its def the pump.

i just brought up the pump cuz the exact same thing happend to one of my buddy's dakota a few years ago, and it ended up being the pump.
i think it had some where around 150k miles on it when it went bad.

good point on hooking it up to a manual gauge first.

My 99 Durango with 318 does the same thing when it is low on oil. Check gauges light comes on, and oil pressure drops. My Durango doesn't leak any oil, and doesn't really appear to smoke, but, it does use some oil.

It usually uses a quart about every 600 miles. That is really just a guesstimate. I've never actually written the mileage down and seen exactly how many miles I have driven. I'm going to check my pcv valve in a few minutes.

Not to get anymore off topic in this thread, but James...search for "plenum repair". I believe that is your problem.

Happened in my brothers WJ Jeep GC. It was the sending unit...Replaced it with the $50.00 part and problem fixed. Start small and work your way to bigger more expensive probelems.

Yes, check the oil pressure sender. My 99 D did the same thing. Would go down to ~30psi then drop to nothing. Pulled the cover off the sender and was full of oil! Put a new on in and works fine. By the way mine's going out again, same symptoms. The sender is a piss-poor design! Who ever engineered it should be fired!

Same on the 5.9L also??

I swear, every time someone posts a problem I haven't experienced yet, my D somehow senses it and develops the same problem. This morning, I stopped at the first stop sign at the bottom of a hill and my Check Gauges light came on. I looked at the oil pressure gauge and it was sitting on zero. After going through the stop sign, the pressure returned to normal.

Come to think of it, I should check the oil level also.
