Hello All

Here is Ol' 303! She was an airport service truck in Austin Texas. Had it for a couple months. Knocks like crazy (quiet when cold, loudest at idle in neutral) and have combed all the internets for similar problems. I'm suspecting the bearings but already pulled the transmission yesterday to check flexplate and torque converter. I found a missing tooth on starter gear welded to torque converter, a crack in the converter shaft and wear on the transmission shaft splines. Flexplate is in one piece but has a little scar from where the tooth bounced around and got ground up. Could be bent a little. Transmission runs great but klunked out of park, mostly when engine reved after turning the key.
Has anyone seen this knocking problem before? The odometer reads 87,000
Thanks Matt

This Dodge Dakota Sport is my first truck and I bought it a year or two ago and I spend more time working on it or thinking about working on it than most people. Its not the best looking truck but you cant expect alot from a person still in high school. I have put about a grand into the sound system. These pictures are the most recent and I've done alot of work to it since I first got it. My next plans are to install a roll pan onto it as well as dual hood scoops. I was thinking about lowering it but I am starting to rethink that. I rather do it the right way even if it is expensive. I'm also planning on installing headers as well as a custom paint job this summer.

'90 Dakota LE X-Cab

Mine is a 3.9 V6/Auto with 3.90 posi. It's got a fair number of options, all power. All original with 174,000 miles on it. This little truck just keeps on going. I probably average about $500/yr in repairs/upgrades... other than that... gas and oil is about all it needs. And, repairs/upgrades... I mean like new tires/wheels, new battery, new starter, new hoses/cooling system, new brakes/lines, new cat-back with Flowmaster, Rhinoliner bed coating, diamond plate tool chest, Kenwood deck (Bluetooth) and speakers, Valentine1 radar detector, tune up parts. For years, all it got was gas tossed to it. I've flushed the tranny, replaced the filter, dropped the diff fluid, cleaned it all up and it has ALL synthetic fluids throughout (yeah, posi additive put back in there too). New shocks, new brake lines. Little by little, bringin' it back into shape again.

The truck belonged to a buddy of mine. It wouldn't start... he didn't wanna deal with fixin' it and bought himself a new truck. So... after getting him a quote on how much to make this one run... and deducting it from it's blue book value... he decided that if I wanted the truck I could have it. So... in five years' time... a few repairs and a few upgrades here/there... I'm perfectly happy with this little truck ! It had green growin' on it when I got it... so, a little rubbing compound and some wax too. I've got a color matched canopy for it too... but prefer it nekkid.

Talking Inktristink side note...

So... this afternoon, the guy who I got my Dakota from? The guy who decided to buy himself a new (actually, slightly used) GMC Sonoma and gave me the Dakota? Well... his Sonoma wouldn't start for him... so... I toddle on over with my jumper cables and voltmeter (IN my Dakota).

A simple test with the voltmeter across the battery terminals cause me to suspect the battery is weak. I jump start his Sonoma (WITH my Dakota) and then put the voltmeter across the battery terminals while it's running... 14.3 volts register. So... I tells him to take his truck to get a new battery, and to NOT shut it off before he gets to the shop.

Yup... they confirmed my diagnosis and assured him his charging system was AOK... and that his battery was on the fritz and sold him a new one.

I had to feel a little bit satisfied to know that a "throw-away" Dakota came to the rescue of the guy that saw no value in his truck... especially AFTER I'd told him what it needed to "run again"... and, after doing those repairs to it... a number of years later... it's still runnin' strong !!
