Tried to make the title as indicative of my question, so here goes:
I'm getting ready to install a low pressure electric fuel pump on one of the crossmember braces under the truck bed. My plan is to splice the pump into the rubber hose section that jumps from the sending unit on the tank (pickup tube, float, etc) to the steel lines that turn a 90° and run with the frame.
Is this preferable to mounting the pump to the frame rail and splicing in the steel fuel lines? I want to avoid cutting the fuel lines if possible, but I don't want to sacrifice performance, quality, etc.
Can anyone who has converted to an electric fuel pump give me some pointers?
Some (most) electric pumps push fuel, but a few pull. That would determine placement on the vehicle. What pump do you have?
Personally I would try to avoid cutting into the metal lines. I would mount the pump where it can get some air flow (to keep it cool) and where it (and the rubber lines) won't get hit by stuff coming off the ground.
The fuel pump I bought is the Summit low pressure pump for carbureted applications.
After (finally) reading the manual, this is what I've concluded...
-Pump needs to be as close to below the lowest point of the fuel tank as possible.
-Pump needs to be as close to the rear of the vehicle as possible.
-Pump MUST be mounted in a vertical position with the motor on top.
-This particular pump is designed to be gravity fed or siphon fed. It pumps the fuel, but sucking it out of the tank will greatly reduce the life of the pump.
On my '79, the best place that acheived both of these placement guidelines was on the frame rail under the passenger door where the frame "steps down" a few inches to accomodate getting in the door. Right in the lower part of that angle I could drill the frame to accommodate the bracket, and the fuel line was a nice long piece that I could cut section out of big enough to have room for my flanging tool. I flanged each end of the fuel line where cut and spliced in the rubber FI grade fuel line and fuel pump. Now it is below the lowest point of the fuel tank, and relatively close to the rear of the vehicle. Closer than the Mechanical one was, anyway!
Just in case anyone needs some pointers, I'll post some pics. I hope no one tells me I screwed up the placement!
First picture is a pressure regulator, with 1 input from the fuel pump, and 2 outputs one to the carb and one back to the fuel tank. Second is fuel pump mounted on frame rail
i have some pics of the electric pump on my truck on the sabrina thread
