I am wondering if someone knows what the cause would be of a hub leak and what to expect in the line of repairs.
I am assuming that gear oil leaking from the axle near the wheel is a hub leak. :help:
Its an axle seal leaking.
Here is a tech article on how to fix it.
Which side is it? If its teh left side youll ahve to pull your ring gear and carrier out to fix it http://www.pavementsucks.com/tech/axleseal.php
Well I hope you have better luck in getting the hub to stop leaking than I did
I have put in about 7 seals and my local dodge dealer put in 2 and everytime I pull my boat it starts leaking again.
I changed all the bearings and cones the axle's aren't bent but nothing I do stops the left rear axle seal from leaking.
But they are easy to change.
1.take tire off
2. pull axle out
3. pull the bearing adjusting nut keeper out
4. take the bearing adjusting nut off
5. pull hub from axle tube
6. flip it over and pull the seal out
7. autozone carries this seal in stock for about 12.00
8. pack all bearings with good bearing grease
9. replace seal and use a little orange gasket maker on the metal part of the seal
10. replace hub and bearing adjusting nut
11. torque this nut to 120 ft. lbs and then back it off a 1/3 of a turn
this gives you the correct preload on the bearing.
12. reinstall axle and torgue the bolts to 90 ft. lbs
13. use brake cleaner to wash the brake shoes clean of grease
14 top off rear end grease if needed
Mike
I thought of that as well but it is not the problem because if a vent was plugged it would blow out the weakest seal not the new one everytime,
and everytime the metal part of the seal is out of round.
Even my dodge dealer is stumped on it.
but that was my first thought was a vent and then the bearings an cones were next to get replaced there is nothing left but the hub, axle, tube left.
