Some help please from you folks. 2009 Ram 4x4 is being sold to the son, he had to have it and also helping out the kid. Looking at this new 2014 2500 4x4 with the 6.4L. Anybody got and thoughts? Reading its suppose to have 410hp @ 5600rpm and 429lbs. @ 4000rpm. 27 more ponies and 29 more pounds than the 5.7L. Also has the MDS. I have 35's on the 2009 with the 3.55 rear axle ratio, making it a 3.31 or close. MDS does not work anymore but mileage is not too bad. I'm thinking mileage on this 2014 will be about the same??? I believe the hp and torque is the same on the 1500 as is the 2500, just different motors??? Also got my eye on a used 2012 Laramie 4x4. Help me guys make a decision.....

I'd go with the new truck with the 6.4 if you can swing it. Or wait it out and buy a Power Wagon with the 6.4.

Mojo has the truck you are talking about so I am sure he will step in with some read world advise.

If I was buying a new HD Hemi today I'd get the 6.4L Hemi and make sure it was matched to 4.10 gears. I'm going to assume the MDS helps with the fuel economy a bit, but these things are still big bricks on wheels.

AMEN, you do not drive a goat for MPG's, anybody that knows them, knows this. Do you all tend to agree that if one was to go with 4.10 gears that the MDS would activate more that say with 3.92 or 3.73 gears?? I have offend wonder about this. I do know going in the opposite direction with say 3.55 gears and going larger in tire size it does not come on hardly at all. Mojo, please shed some light.......

I totally agree with the idea that a 3.92's or 4.10's should allow the MDS to kick in easier than 3.55's or 3.21's. I drove an 8speed 1500 with 3.21's with a slight cross wind and it kept switching from Econ to 7th to 8th,then back to Econ, then back to 8th- very annoying...
The dealer did not have any 3.92 8speeds on the lot to test drive- so based on the above, I ordered a 8speed, 3.92 truck. Hopefully Mojo will confirm this with his 2500 and 4.10's/MDS

Ok so I drove the 14' this weekend with the 6 speed HEMI with 3.55 gears. Seat of the pants expression is my 09 with 35's and 3.55 gears has a better feeling. Also drove the 8-speed w/HEMI with 3.21 gears, that truck is not for me. And then I drove the 6.4L with 3.73 gears. Heavier truck, I know but the seat of the pants feeling is the same as my 09' 1500. Reset the MPG while test driving, 55mph somewhere around 13.3mpg's. Yea its a new truck and should improve. My impressions, 6-speed is what I have now in a truck, nothing wrong with it, 8-speed w/3.21 gears not for me and the 6.4, I'm scared of the MPG's and I really don't need this big of a truck. What I would like to drive is a Hemi with 3.92 gears in a 8-speed. I think that might work. Anybody drove/got one of these they can shed so light on?

The 8 speed Ram 1500 Hemi with 3.92s is a good combo. Let me put it to you this way my Quad cab 6 speed 3.92s is fast I got it to 60 now in about 6.7 seconds and a heavier Laramie Crew cab 4x4 8 speed 3.92s does it in 6.5 or less seconds. Wish I would have waited a year myself but I am still happy. Redquad get a truck with 3.92s you will not be disappointed.

Absolutely love my 2014 with the 3.92/8 speed combo. After 10k miles, overall average is 16.8 mpg. Haven't logged any runs since new, need to try a couple more.

I love my truck, I have the 2014 2500 hemi and get about 11-12 mpg around town and about 16 highway but it's still new. I don't expect to get much more than that but for what I wanted it for I'm happy. Oh yeah I have the 3.73 rear but didn't go with the 4.10 because I don't have nothing big that I wanted to tow.

I got mine because all of the trailer that I was looking at I would get to my payload before I would the towing. The 1/2 ton to me the payload was about 1,100 or so, I would be over my payload before the 10,000 lbs of towing. The 2500 have a payload of 2,400 and the towing is 11,400 which give me much more room that the 1500. It all about what do a person want to do with their truck.

Some of the guys on the other forum that have bought the 6.4L have said that they are getting about what the 5.7L are getting in mileage so I don't know where the MDS come into play, maybe just hype.

When I drove the 6.4 the other day, the MDS never came on. I test drove the beast about ten or so miles. The sales rep said the 2500 with the 6.4 does not have the MDS. I said, well somebody better tell Ram that cause their advertising it with it? I did take my foot out of it so the MDS would engage but it never did??

It does have MDS according to Dodge. There is some confusion since the 3rd Gen 2500's with the Hemi did not have the MDS option.

The 6.4 2500 DOES have MDS. The 5.7 2500 does NOT have MDS.
Old man is picking up his '14 2500 4x tomorrow, I can tell you this, compared to my '13 5.7 2500 4x, it's not only faster, but waaaay smoother riding.
Both have 3.73s The only gear options available are 3.73 and 4.10 in the 2500s, and for whatever reason, I've never seen a 4.10 on the lot anywhere)

The '14s are a night n days difference IMO. (I shoulda waited)

The Hemi 6.4 has the same mileage as the 5.7 due to MDS. Bigger displacement engines typically use more fuel. Props to Ram for keeping the new Big Hemi as fuel efficient as the Non MDS 5.7 in the 2500. I think its working fine based upon what I am reading.
