Any opinions on the #1 46re for my 2001 2500 4x4? I like the mega-viper from PATC,but money's tight. Old trans exploded internally at 45,000. So much for Mopar rebuilts. I tow a lot of bigger boats and welding rigging plus gear. Don't want to build one if I can help it.

i am also contemplating a few rebuild companies. really what i want is a slightly higher stall speed converter/ firmer shifts/ and the absolute need for the 46re to oil in park. it also might be worth my while to upgrade the direct drive drum with more clutches and better spring counts. not sure if pact has the drum upgrades though. aps does. and both companies make a good trans/ tq converter combo

PATC calls their's the direct clutch power pack. The Mega-viper seems to have it all for one low price. I would also do the Borgeson steering box at the same time,,,,I mean what the hell right? It's all still cheaper than financing a new truck.

yes patc has a good set of clutches/ added ratio application levers and what not but i dont believe they have the ability to disengage the system the way it should be. the direct drive drum also has to counter the added forces.
http://www.apsprecision.com/images/H...ings%20891.jpg http://www.apsprecision.com/images/H...Drum%20897.jpg read about the problems that occur when a 5:1 ratio is installed without upgrading the drum! gassers should only use the 4.2:1 ratio levers. and could benefit from the drum upgrades. someone please correct me if i'm wrong. there is a serious learning curve here!

so far my impression of a jasper typical replacement are not good. the standard "engine" replacement has been know to be 20hp less and the compression is lower than the original stock magnum motor. as the trans go- they may do a better job. though i would tend to aquire a class I or class II trans

I got the stock replacement 46re they tell the upgrades in the planetary gears and clutch packs the only thing Tm trying to find out now is the torque converter has 175k stamped on it but when I called yesterday about it they said it has stock stall speed of 1800 -2100 they dont offer performance 1 and 2 anymore and I have the stock replacement

160k is the measurement used on the stock converters now, i think. the 46re has a standard stall out in the 1600 1800 rpm range.
you are A step up and it might not be noticeable to a daily driver, but on the dyno it does sure show! i have been looking at sprag gears and 4 planetarys instead of 3. also looking into the changes made in the durango RTs on the direct drive drums. added springs, added clutches. trans are a headache! pm calling "tactransman" is a good idea! whats the best? ha! i have no idea

I tow mostly local as in less than a mile and under 35 mph. Rarely tow on the highway and the welding gear I'd guess is under 1000lbs. Next trans will be a custom built one from Transdepot I suspect. I'll be buying one of their coolers at the same time. Now I'm just waiting for the funds to materialize for this and a Borgeson steering box. Might even get a little body work whens it's all done.

Find a Daaco trans part supplier, buy a quality rebuild kit, rebuilt converter, and a rebuild manual. Pulling the trans was the hardest part of my rebuild on my 99 Ram. Even with replacing the solenoids, sensors, and adding a shift kit. I was still less than 500.00 total in my 47RE in my Ram. The OD is a bit of a PITA compressing the spring pack, but nothing too hard. I have 20K miles with a lot of heavy towing since the rebuild and it still shifts nice and crisp.

i have been told a few times now that they make a 48 internal swap. makes it a whole bunch stronger then you have the ease of doing 48 upgrades and making it even better.

You can put any 48RE part in a 46 RE EXCEPT the rear band. The case prevents you from using the rear ( Rev) band.

Is APS even still around now that Wayne is gone? I cant get much info at all out of him on Facebook, I admin his old chatsite that he basically has deserted and left me high and dry on with no way to fix it. If anyone can get through to him let him know I would much like to talk to him.
