So after reading numerous threads on this site and other Mopar sites, I am considering a 318 build - somewhere in the 350hp-400hp range. I have 2 D150's...1 is an 88 Prospector, the other is a 92 plain jane work truck. Both have 318's, but the 92 has the Magnum version. From reading the articles, it would appear a .040 overbore on the 318 will give me a 324; use flattop pistons and zero the block...so far so good...I'm assuming I can use the stock crank, correct? Just polish it (or grind it, depending on its condition) and use new main bearings. I believe the stock connecting rods should be fine, just use new hardware when bolting back together. Now, here's where I am stuck. I have 2 articles claiming to do budget 400hp 318's...one uses 360 heads with some valve work, the other uss 318 Magnum heads. What is the best way? I have a Magnum engine...I could rebuild the 88 engine and steal the magnum heads, or I could rebuild the magnum and convert it to carb...I see Edelbrock now offers the Magnum intake. However, what is my best route? Should I find some 360 heads for the 88 318, use the magnum heads on the 88 318, or just go with the magnum and rebuild it? My issue with the 92 (and maybe the 88) is the fuel pump...I really would prefer to do a mechanical pump, not an electric, but the magnum requires an early model snout if I do that...will the 88 readily accept a mechanical pump, or will I need to swap that as well? I want to put this engine in the 92, as this is the truck I currently drive (it is not my only vehicle, so having it out of commission for a month or 2 is OK)...any thoughts or advice?

Aluminum heads, intake, cam, headers, duals. All should put you around 350-375hp. Or you could swap a 440 already making close to 400 hp/ 500tq. There's no replacement for displacement. It costs more to make a 400 hp 318 than a slightly modded 440 pulled out of a wrecked car. 440's were originally available in the Ram 350's, so you could find motor mounts. Is the truck an auto or manual?

The timing cover from a non-magnum engine can be used on the magnum engine.
The snout of the magnum cam is shorter, so a short centering piece will need to be machined to support the fuelpump eccentric, if you go this route. It will need to fit into the center of the cam gear, and extend out beyond the gear.
It takes a radical cam to get 400hp out of a 318. ~238 degrees duration at 0.050" lift.
Magnum Vs 360: On the positive side, Magnum heads have better quench, and smaller chambers. The 360 heads lack this. On the negative side, magnum heads are more likely to be cracked if overheated. Also the roller cam costs more than a flat tappet cam used in the 360.

i say use the 88 318 heads if they are the 302 castings, port a little, install the 360 valve size. 1.88 intake 1.60 exhaust compared to the stock 318 size 1.78 intake and 1.50 exhaust. port the runner openings and the exhaust openings to the same size as the gaskets.

318 magnum heads would be cool though. they have 1.96 intake and 1.60 exhaust valve size (i think). but you'd have to shave them down a little to match the compression that the 302 heads would give you

problem with using the 360 heads is you have to shave them down more than the magnum heads to get compression back. the more shaving you do the less quench you have.

and ya the stock crank should be enough. although i dont have an engine in my truck because the crank broke. it had an edelbrock performer intake and it was previously bored over .030 with flat top pistons.......only performance parts on the thing. but i think the break was due to shoddy workmanship when it was rebuilt.
