So, I've had this tranny leak on my Torqueflite 727 since I got the truck. It's not the pan and it's not the stick tube this much I know. It's leaking from above down the right side of the case. I can't see where it's coming from. On top of that, there is this gooey stuff that is running down the case that is like chewing gum. Does anyone know what this is and where the leak could be coming from. The trans works fine.

It may be a crack. There's nothing that can leak on top it's one complete housing.

Thanks! I don't think it's a crack though. I'm thinking it's the dipstick tube seal afterall and what I'm seeing down the case is that gooey stuff melting from above. It's grey in color and sticky like chewing gum. Any idea what is melting from above?

check to be sure that you do not have a leaky rocker cover gasket
the oil can run down the engine and onto the bell housing and then onto the transmission and trick you into thinking there is a transmission leak |

sorry electraglide. i was thinking about the transfer case and not the transmission. transmission is just bare case on the top. nothing fancy. if you sitll want that pic i'll get one for you.
as someone mentioned, could be oil. valve cover gaskets or the oil sending unit could be leaking.

that's cool then i don't need the pic. definitely tranny fluid. yep, red! took the filler tube out today and got a new o-ring. And it looks like the new ring is the same diameter as the tube as it is fitted in the groove. i wonder if i should get the next size bigger?

as a followup I finally got the tube and new seal replaced and eureka! No more tranny leak. I had to straighten the tube some since it had been crimped in 2 places, but a small price to pay for nearly 5 years of leaky mess. Thanks to all that took an interest.
