I'm taking your advice and changing the transmission, transfer case, and both differentials fluids tomorrow. I bought Wix filters for the transmission before I traded my Ram off. I'm glad I hung on to them and didn't dump them cheap just to get them out of my way.

Bravery is not the issue. Back in February, I had the Durango stripped down to the block to replace the valve springs.

Last weekend, I finished putting my wife's 4Runner back together after stripping it down to fix a sensor harness that was nibbled on by a rodent.

I've not had the best experiences with automatic transmissions - mostly because I was doing too little too late. I always dread that moment when the pan comes down and you get to see what omens the transmission gods have left in it for you.

Just curious, why did you remove the heads to swap valve springs? I'm hoping to replace mine relatively soon

Mostly because I was going about 60 mph when I dropped the #5 intake valve due to a broken spring. I pulled that side so I could inspect the piston for damage. I decided to pull the other to check it out and replace the head gasket since I was already there. It also allowed me to change all the valve stem seals, clean the intake/exhaust runners, and check the condition of the valves themselves. Yes it was a lot more work, but I felt a lot better about things knowing that all was good on both sides. I wish I had the money to do a cam swap - it would have been a perfect time to slide one in.

Are you going to use the 6.1L exhaust springs? I went with them and the 6.1L push rods to avoid the ominous Hemi tick and future valve spring failures.

After a busy afternoon, I've got most of my pre-winter maintenance done.

The lube in the rear diff has been changed out. It didn't look nearly as bad as I thought it would. I believe that it may have been changed before I got it. It was dark but not black and didn't stink like gear lube past its prime. The transfer case was way overdue for a changing - the ATF in it was black as could be.

The transmission has me confused. The fluid didn't look that terrible when I drained it. It was dark, but nowhere near being burnt. The pan had very little buildup in the pan and the magnet was fairly clean. I was beginning to think that it had been changed too until I pulled the spin on filter off. It was a OEM unit that was date stamped 09/04. Perhaps the PO used one of those flush system thingies without ever bothering to change the filters. No problem - Wix filters now installed and its shifting fine.

Now I just have make sure there's no leaks. I ran out of daylight just as I was finishing... All that's left is to drain and refill the front diff.

I figure by next Christmas I'll top 200K. When one puts 400 miles a week on it just to go to work - it tends to add up pretty quick.

I only do 7-9k per year anymore. That's a lot of driving

Sometimes you have to go where the work is. Moving closer isn't going to happen for a number of reasons.

Got a lot of work done the last couple days...

Changed oil
Cleaned air filter
Changed crankcase breather filter
Drained and refilled transfer case
Drained and cleaned then refilled front and rear axles

Still have to do the transmission service but I have to order the filters first.

working on that one over break, hoping to end up with something like this, maybe a little more tube work to clean it up.
