Hey guys,

Gonna start driving the Dodge again pretty soon and I was planning on adding a tach to it.
Is it possible to buy the factory tachs anywhere? (I think some models came with them, right?) Or is an aftermarket my best option?

Who has installed an aftermarket tach? Which one did you go with and where did you mount it?
I want to try to make it look as factory as possible; considering buying whatever is most reliable and disassembling it to swap in a gauge face that I will print out myself to match the styling of the other gauges.

Does it have that little "Pocket" in the center of the dash? If so, ive stuffed two small gauges in there. Looks pretty good

This is the dash as it currently sits. Maybe the pocket you're referring to is where my head unit is?
Or maybe the ash tray area. Currently I have the ash tray pocket set up to hold my phone when it's connected to the stereo, and I've grown quite attached to that set-up so I don't think I'll move it from there.

I was thinking of maybe mounting it to the left of the where the factory gauges are. Cut a hole and mount it flush to the surface.

Ah okay.
Okay, hopefully someone who has it set up like that will post a picture--I'm curious to see how close to factory people have made it look.

i have a suntach mounted in the right wing of my dash. easy to install but i already had the wing with the cutout for a clock. you can get a holesaw and the tach will look factory. there are pics on my photobucket link. if i had seen the made in china tag i would have looked for a different tach

^ That does look pretty good actually. I'll probably go with the left side since I don't have any gauges on the left and I think it'll look more in place by the rest of the gauges.

you might get lucky and find the vac and volts left wing gauges one day. and the right wing is the factory location. but its your truck...and old dodge truck owners are more individualistic than brand x owners

That's a good point...guess it will be something to consider. I've been thinking about eliminating the ammeter for a voltmeter one of these days, in which case I wouldn't be super interested in the vac/volt left wing. I'll have to think about it a bit more though.

Vacuum gauge would be nice. Losing vacuum is the first sign for many engine problems. Whenever I get an engine in my truck again ill be putting an rpm, temperature, and a vacuum gauge in my truck.

matt if you want to spend the money, autometer makes a 5" cluster that would look pretty cool in your dash; speedometer, tach, and a 4 gauge unit. only one missing is the vac gauge

i don't know the diameter of your gauge openings but it might be worth a look if you want to go aftermarket

my truck is a whole other monster. i think what i'm going to do is install gauges elsewhere in the cab but try and get the couple of gauges in the dash to start working again. that way i'll have back up gauges i guess

The factory tack went on the left side of the dash and there was an optional clock that went on the right side if memory serves me. I believe they where 2 1/8. It's an easy install.

Mine (a 78) has the triangular pieces on both sides of the main cluster. The left one was cut for two smaller gauges (volts and vacuum) the right had one larger hole for a tach or clock. That said, I currently have an aftermarket tach on the steering column.

Wire them in is easy in our older trucks.

I put an Autometer Sport Comp, 2 5/8" i think, behind a factory tach bezel in my 78 when the origional tach stopped working. My only beef with it is the illumination is white and I cannot easily change it to green to match the rest of the gages.

I've seen gauges that come with colored sleeves that go over the bulb to change the color.
