4.7L HO metal filings in the oil 60k mi

Hey, any engine re-builders here think my brother-in-law's engine could be resurrected? He's getting some weird noises around 3k rpm, quiet at idle. 2002 Jeep Overland, BTW.

Has he done any exploratory wor to find out where the issue may lie?
Have the valve covers been removed to inspect the cam, or is this a low end knock?

Are you able to verify the exhaust leak?
No vibrations, etc. that would indicate engine damage?
