Is it recommended to clean the Idle Air Control valve or simply replace it?

I assume yours is from 02 (same year as your truck?)

Replace it.

It's good to clean it every 20k miles or so. Replace every 60k or so miles.

I got mine for $20 at local auto part store.

I clean mine with carb or brake cleaner.

X2 ... The last time I did my TB, the IAC was fine but the bore was full of that oily crap that gets on the back of our TB throttle plates. I just cleaned everything with brake cleaner and put it all back together.

When cleaning the TB I let it soak in solution over night.

Then take a flexable wire brush (like something youd use to clean a gun) and really get it clean. I do this once a year

Helps keep the sensors in there clean an spffiy. Take care of your vehicle and it will take care of you

Let it soak is no big deal and may even help so long as the sensors are removed.

Well I went through the procedure to clean my throttle body and replace the Idle Air Control Valve today (thanks a lot to Dskirtech for the procedure to clean the throttle body. Even though I have a different engine it was a great walk-thru).

Now my engine is idling much better - very steady versus the swings of 800 RPMs I was seeing (sometimes more) - or the high constant idle.

The throttle body wasn't quite as dirty as I expected for the truck to have 131,000 miles on it.

Two Questions:

1) I wasn't sure about resetting the computer - or if it's even necessary. I did have the negative battery post disconnected during the 2 or 3 hours I was working on it. Do I need to do anything else to reset it?

2) Also - what is the normal idle for the 4.7L engine? So far mine is around 650 rpm.

Thanks

Jeff

Mine with A/C off is right at 500rpm.
Baby smooth

With A/C on it's at 650, also baby smooth

(Baby smooth = Checking tach to make sure it's even still running)

ok - so it's been a few weeks now since I replaced my IAC and cleaned my throttle body. The truck starting to have idle issues again - though not as severe as it was before.

Sometime it idles high (1200 - 1500) for no apparent reason. Sometimes it jumps up and down. Other times it's stable at around 650 or so.

What else can make this happen? Could a PCV valve cause this (I didn't touch it)?

Thanks

This might sound a little nutty but have you checked the level in your power steering? When the PS see high pressure, it bumps the idle up. This is to help you drive easier in parking lots or at slow speeds. If the fluid is bad it could cause some problems as well.
