Very true. I always end up doing something in the dead of winter because of my plowing business (whether it be the truck's steering box last winter or the plows hydraulics-although I got a brand new plow last winter knock on wood). I really don't want to be doing this so if I can't get it buttoned up by October and running well then I'm not going to bother until spring. I can't have the truck down at all during the winter months so I'm not willing to work the bugs out during that time.

You are right about parts, I started buying more and more stuff for this and had to back off which is probably why I haven't gone near it lately. Just to keep myself from spending more money!

If you make sure you have every part necessary [this is where research is key] any swap without massive fabrication work will be easy pending hang-ups like my broken intake bolt. If it wasn't for that bolt I would have probably been driving my truck by now, and probably have to pull the V10 again to do head gaskets before too long, haha.

I would say if nothing else, go out every few days and do a couple of small things to it, especially since it's in your driveway [I have to drive 20 miles to mine]. It'll keep you interested and moving forward but keep you from being so enthralled that you go broke buying parts.

Yeah I just want to get it fired up again and keep starting it every few days so it doesn't loose prime again. Then obviously make sure its running well enough to justify the swap when the time comes. Sounded great when I bought it LOL

Yeah mine ran good too when I bought it out turns out both head gaskets were bad! coolant in oil or white smoke out the exhaust, I would have never known.

Yeah the PO looked like they didn't take very good care of it, which should have been a sign. It had lowish mileage, so the rest of the bottom-end stuff should still be solid. I would have just dropped my cab on the 2500 frame, but the front of the frame has cancerous rust holes on it. The drivetrain is the shining gem of this truck even with a bad clutch and blown head gaskets, haha.

Did you notice the coolant in the oil doing an oil change or just the smoke? What tipped you off that something was wrong?

We only took the heads off because I broke an intake bolt [that is apparently made of platinum or something] and we couldn't get the broken bit out. That's when we saw this:



Not too bad, cylinder walls look decent still and smooth, but that was coolant sitting in there before it dried up from sitting for so long.

Well Gentlemen,
The old 12valve is now gone. I had a few people call on my craigslist add and I never renewed because I didn't care either way (I may not have mentioned I tossed it on craigslist to see if I could flip it for a little $$$). Anyways a guy called and came by. We couldn't get it started but I made him an offer of taking it, paying the money and if he couldn't get it started in 7 days then I'd take it back and give him his money back. Well later that night he called and said it had a siezed altenator so he removed the belt, turned the key and it fired right up- sale final.

So about a week earlier, I found a 1998.5 24 valve Quad cab Long bed being sold needing work (rust on panels, brake lines, tires) for cheap money. I took a look at it, 159k miles, run's like a top (very smooth), interior is in great shape, exterior can use a little work. I told them if I sold my truck I'd give them a call not expecting for my truck to sell. Well I called them yesterday and made an offer, they called back and accepted so I'll be going tomorrow to pick it up.

Which brings me to my next dilema - do I swap the CTD into my 99 and the V10 into the 98 and try to sell the 98? Or do I try to sell my V10 and fix up the 98? Or do I fix a few things on the 98 and try to flip - when I say I got a smokin deal, I really got a smokin deal. I paid $200 more for the 98 then I did for the 94 and its a complete truck.

What do you guys think:

Got the "new" truck back today. I need to fix the brake lines and take it for a spin but im thinking im going to sell the V10 and build up the 98. ill post pics in the AM then will probably start a new thread.

I know this is off topic but If you ever think of getting rid of the 24v let me know. Im in NH and was eyeballing that truck on CL to swap the stuff in my 01. I hate being to slow on good deals. haha
