hey all, im posting this for my mother. Her 1st gen durango runs pretty good minus the consumption of oil. I Was driving it the other day and after start up or a lengthy idle you can def see and smell oil burning in the form of smoke out the exhaust. Its kinda embarassing sometimes. Anyways....I checked the coolant and its good as new.....what would yall check next....rings.....pcv? It will also do it while waiting at red lights, i assume it doesnt appear as bad driving cause its not concentrated in one area

It's best in this case to get a compression test/blow-by-test done on each cylinder. Changing the PCV should be done every 30-K miles or so (that's when I change mine on my 5.9L, but you may be able to go up to 50K).
If the vehicle ran low on oil for a prolonged period of time, a ring may have seized causing excessive scarring on the cylinder wall large enough for oil to creep in, to which there is no easy repair - only rebuild.

One other thing I forgot to mention, if the engine has any 'knock' to it under certain throttle conditions, that can lead to some minor oil consumption. In that case make sure the plugs are gapped properly first. It's more prominent with the 5.2/5.9 engines as they had no knock sensors, but something to think about.
