Can someone tell me if a magnum V8 flywheel will bolt up to the clutch assembly from a NP2500 (NV535) 5 spd manual? I have a ’92 5.2 motor that I’m putting into a ’89 Dakota 4WD convertible. Since the motor is a Magnum it needs the ’92 or later flywheel for the tone ring . The Dak has the NP2500 trans which I will eventually upgrade to a NV3500 (or similar), but in the meantime I’d like to use the existing trans and clutch if I can.

Does anyone have a NV535 clutch assembly they could measure to help me out? I need the distance from any one clutch assembly mounting hole directly across the center of the clutch to the opposite hole, center-to-center. That's the measurement I need to determine if the 535's clutch will bolt up to the holes in the magnum pressure plate.

My guess would be no it will not bolt up. Just get the correct transmission. If you want just ask a few local transmission shops. I know you said you will eventually upgrade but do it right the first time, before that V8 kills that little transmission. It didn't come behind the V8 for a reason.

Hey, there is life here after all!
aardakota, I've wished mine was an automatic more than once. dodgef25, I know, the NP2500 is a light weight. I've been looking for a good NV3500, but if I don't find it before I'm ready to drop the motor in, it's gonna go with what it's got. I've seen pics of NV3500's in early daks where the shifter is coming up under the dash - what's with that? Which NV should I be looking for to avoid that? Obviously '94 to '96 daks should work, but what else? |

The NV3500 only came behind the V8 Magnum 94-up.
The info I got is Manual 1987 - 1991 New Process A535 / NV2500 (same transmission... the name changed when the company was sold) A good NV2500 post Here. 1992 - 1993: L4 and V6 AX-15 5-speed (1st 3.83, 2nd 2.33, 3rd 1.44, 4th 0.79 Rev. 4.22) V8 No Manual trans offered. 1994 - 1996 L4 and V6 AX-15 5-speed V8 NV3500 5-speed (1st 4.01, 2nd 2.32, 3rd 1.40, 4th 1.00,5th 0.73, Rev. 3.55) |

Thanks for the tranny info DodgeF25.
I have another question. My NP2500 has the NP231 transfer case as I recall, which I believe most dodges had in the 90's. Since the Tcase is married to the trans, can it replace the tailpiece on a 2WD NV3500, or do I need to find a 4WD NV3500? Last edited by Ragged89 : 03-24-2012 at 11:17 PM. |

3.9 and 318 have same bellhousing so I dont see how the Magnum flywheel couldnt work; I mean starter iss in same place so the flywheel would have to be the same diameter etc; a 3.9 clutch will NOT fit a 318 though the 318 flywheel is drilled for a 1/2" larger diameter pressure plate to mount. a 3.9 and Jeep 4.0 inline however DO take exactly the same clutch kit (though the flywheels are different between them)

well ive done a v8 swap in my 97 2wd (orig v6), with a ax-15 trans, had to use v8 flywheel, pressure plate and clutch out of a nv3500. works good had the ax15 behind the v8 with no problems soo far... could have used the smaller clutch, pressureplate and flywheel out of the ax-15/v6 but the v8 motor wouldn't run because of the diffrent flywheel and cranksensor
