water pump pulley

I have a whining noise when the RPM's go up even when i start it. I scoped the alternator and thought that was it but after replacing it and doing some more investigating I found that the noise is traveling though everything.

I took off the belt and the noise was gone so i started spinning pulleys on everything and the pulley on the water pump seems to be the next logical choice. My question is can i just replace the pulley or do i need to replace the pump?

The bearing internal to the water pump would be the cause of roughness when turning the pully. So the water pump would have to be changed.

I have a 2004 QC 5.7l 1500

I don't think i was looking at the water pump pulley now that i look at it. Is that an idler pulley under the tensioner on the bottom left of this pic?

Yes, that's an idler. The water pump is directly above the crank pulley.

Pull the belt off the engine then use a rope to spin each pulley. Replace the one that make noise; easy.

Yeah, there's two idlers and a tensioner on the left. I replaced all three of mine when I changed my belt. It was cheap and was suggested by many on the boards...

I changed all 3 as well back in the winter. The noise was bad in the cold and is still there but not as noticeable in warm weather. I'm thinking it might be the water pump. All pulleys seemed to be okay when I had the belt off.

Can you wiggle the fan either side-to-side or vertically? If so, the pump bearings are gone/going.

My water pump went out right before I changed mine and was the cause for my squeak, but a good idea non the less...

It was the idler pulley making the noise. Glad it is finally gone! Too bad i spent $150 on an alternator before i figured it out though
