Thumbs down 08 Avenger won't shift out of park?

My son has an 08 Avenger. He was driving it today, stopped at a Speedway to get something to drink, came back out of store and it won't shift out of park. Any suggestions or info would be greatly appreciated.

Your Park lock-out broke, its a little plastic piece on the shifter, There is a recall on this from DODGE, You can get it out of park by removing the trim ring and use a screwdriver to move the park lock-out on the side of the shifter.

i had that same prob on my scion tc i put in some aftermarket taillights and the gear box wouldnt let me move the shifter,,till u pry up the little plastic piece on the shifter assembly and push in the little plastic square then i could freely move the shifter in and out of drive,,it turned out to be a safety gizmo tied to the cars electrical,,,it didnt see the same resistance i guess with the led taillights so it triggered a moving hazard signal withen the cars computer and locked me out electronically on the transmission

This happened on my 2008 Jeep Patriot as well, one time, and has never happened again. All it took was releasing the lever which on the Patriot (and Caliber/Compass) is accessible on the right side of the center console next to the shifter. I was lucky to have my laptop with me when it happened and searched a couple forums for a quick answer. I understand this is common on Hondas of certain years, too. But it was a first-time occurrence for me and had me pretty upset with that Jeep til I figured it out.

My car was recently stuck in the park, and it was all that was wrong was in the top of the shifter when you press the button was a little loose. All I had to do was take about the top of the shifter with the button and replace it and better, so it worked perfectly. was an automatic, I do not think you have this problem with a gear lever.
