Hello All! and here is my first quest: Code P2311

Hello all, thanks for this awesome site. I have learned a ton by bothering no one. Till now... Last week, I went out to start my (04-Ram-5.7-CAI-Flowmaster) truck. As soon as I started it the engine light came on. The truck had been sitting for about 2 weeks as I was out of town. Fortunately, I was ready to buy my first SC tuner and this was the perfect scenario to sell the idea to my lovely wife. It worked! Upon receiving the tuner the first thing I did was read the code. It read: "P2311 Ignition Coil 4 Secondary Circuit Insufficient Ionization" I replaced the coil, checked plugs on 4 and 7 and checked plug wires. Still there. Any thoughts or experience in this area? I am out of warranty so I am trying to stay away from the dealer, not to mention they closed the two nearest dealerships....in ORLANDO! Thanks to all who read this long note.

I say clear the code and see if it comes back..if the truck feels fine it mabe just a hiccup. I'm kinda experienced the same thing..I kinda raced an avalon a couple nights ago, during acceleration i see my mil light flashing, I pull a p0307 (cylinder 7 misfire), truck is running fine, i get home and pull coil pack and plug. plug not closed (woo..my first worry), I switched coil pack with number 2 to see if the misfire will follow it...

Thanks for the quick reply. I did clear the code and it returned right away. I noticed a few weeks ago, before the light came on, that cruising around 1200 RPMs there was a slight shudder as well as a slight miss fire during idle. Since I added the SC tuner, those have stopped or become less noticeable (advanced timing)?

if the code came back...try this...switch the coil pack with another and see if the code changes and follows that particular coil pack..then you know maybe what you need is to replace it..

number 4 is the 2nd coil pack on the passenger side, maybe switch with the number 2 coil pack (1st coil on passenger side)

Yes, I switched it out with one from NAPA and got the same code after clearing it. Could it be a faulty wire?

It very well could be. Change it with another one. Clear the code. And see if it follows where it went. Sounds like it's the wire.

Now have changed wires and the issue did not move with the wire. Guess the shop is next.

Got it! Thanks to Superchips locating the problem and you guys encouraging me to keep looking! It was a short in the (power?) wire going to coil # 4 itself. Soldered it, heat shrank it and good to go. Thanks 08QuadCTD and chefred112!

You are welcome. That is what we are here for. Sucks, I was going to say check all the wires (power and ground) to coil pack.. then I thought... well.. they are all loomed up and I bet they are fine...

Yeah i had those codes once when I did my first cam and never had them before that. I swapped my coils (no plug wires on mine) and changed plugs and was still on the same cylinders. I disconnected my coil harness connectors and reseated them and didnt have anymore issues after that. Weird for sure but glad you got yours resolved and posted the fix.
