I would not "flush" my transmission. I did a pan drop which is a 7 quart change and this spring I will do a trans fluid change using 17 quarts of fluid in a clean pail and sucking it up with the hose to the trans. I will put the other hose in an empty bucket and drain out the dirty fluid while taking in the clean fluid. I only have about 15 k on the filters so they will stay in for a while longer. I will be doing the diffs at the same time.

What is the quantity and proper procedure for replacing the oil in a 08 1500 tranny? I want to change with Royal Purple Synth ATF. How does one completely drain the tranny? Just doing a bucket to bucket swap will end up mixing some of the old with new, won't it?

Hey guys, i havent been on this forum in a while but i have a quick question for ya.

Im getting ready to go on a 5 hr trip one way with my 03 dodge ram 1500 3.7 v6, and it has 150,000 miles on it. i bought it from my father with 120,000 on it and i've been driving it for two years no problems.

To my knowledge i have no idea if the transmission fluid has ever been changed or not, he does not remember doing it.

Would you guys recommend leaving it alone or changing it and having the possibility of it "slipping" as some would say because of the high mileage. I just do not want my transmission giving me any trouble on this trip

soo... change it? or leave it be? Any input is appreciated!! Thanks.

me "new to me" 02 has 160k and i am thinking of changing all the fluids.. should i not do this? all i would do is drop the old and add new while in the driveway. not taking it somewhere to have flushed.. also, i have only ever done this to my mud toy jeep.. do i have to worry about a filter or anything?

2005 QUAD CAB HEMI, 2WD, 60k miles. Just changed both filters. Took 9.25 quarts to fill. I was starting to get the first trip in the morning hesitation as soon as I took off. I used autozone filters and valvoline atf+4 fluid. The first day it worked fine, the next morning it slipped BIG TIME and I got 3 codes.

Put OEM filters in and valvoline atf +4 fluid and it has been fine. Don't know if it was the autozone filters or what, but after the oem ones were installed, it runs fine. Very critical of the fluid level. 9.25qts for the second change also.

get it done yet?

I would get the filters from the dealer and make sure it comes with a new o ring with the pickup filter. i used a deep socket and a light tap or two with a hammer to get her in.

=p

any note i did mine and no issues no codes and ive put about 90miles on it since the change. stop n go traffic and some high speed travel.

one thing ive learned use good rtv and let it cure as long as you can!

Did mine a couple of weeks ago both filters and 7.5qts of atf+4. Seems to have taken care of the first thing in the morning trans engagement delay.

This is the best response in the bunch. The deal with flushing a old trans and shocking it is off. Its about dislodging gunk and clutch material, clogging up the screen and killing the trans. We see this at our shop all the time. People take a car with 150k on it to get the trans flush by jims quicky screw and their tranny fails.

I changed mine at 30k, installed a drain plug, and remove 3 or 4 quarts every 10k. There is NO adjustment on our trannys.

I got 96,000 on my 04 Hemi. I just got the tranny fluid changed and filters. Don't know if the previous owner did any of that, but the fluid looked ok before I got it changed. So far, so good, knock on wood!!! Feel free to say a prayer for me as well, since I have very bad luck with everything that has a motor!

If he is talking about his 2008 ram there are no bands to adjust in the 5-45RFE. It is fully electronic (FE).

I think the difference here (in poll results) is between Manuals and autos. Most Dodge auto trannys are problematic to begin with. As for Manual transmissions, 100k or so seems fair. If nothing else comes up, I have 6 quarts of Synchromesh MTF sitting in the basement, and this weekend I'm going to train my NV5600 with 118k miles on it which I presume hasn't been changed, and let you know whats going on in there.

My guess is it comes out fairly clear with a few metal fragments from normal wear and tear.
