Replace rear main seal on 318 V8?

Hi!

Is it possible to replace the rear main seal on a 318 with the engine and transmission still in the car?

If there is room to get the oil pan off, yes.

The 318 uses a split rear main. You have to remove the oil pan, oil pump, and the rear main bearing cap to get at it. The bottom half is easy because it's in the main bearing cap. The top half is a bit harder because you have to use a stiff wire to push the old one out and around the top of the crankshaft.

You will have to seperate the engine from the transmission so the engine can be raised to remove the oil pan.

I believe you can loosen the two motor mounts and lift the engine high enough to gain clearance for the pan removal without separating the tranny. You will have to take out the air cleaner housing to give you enough lifting clearance.
