thermostat replacement

How hard is it to replace the thermostat on a 2000 4.7 Dakota? Any tips? Its under the car right?

2000 Dodge Dakota 4.7 v8 4x4 sport. Flowmaster dual exhaust. Mud terrains.

from the shop manual:


(1) Disconnect negative battery cable at battery.
(2) Drain cooling system (Refer to 7 - COOLING -
(3) Raise vehicle on hoist.
(4) Remove splash shield.
(5) Remove lower radiator hose clamp and lower
radiator hose at thermostat housing.
(6) Remove thermostat housing mounting bolts,
thermostat housing and thermostat (Fig. 22).
(1) Clean mating areas of timing chain cover and
thermostat housing.
(2) Install thermostat (spring side down) into
recessed machined groove on timing chain cover (Fig.
(3) Position thermostat housing on timing chain
(4) Install two housing-to-timing chain cover bolts.
Tighten bolts to 13 N·m (112 in. lbs.) torque.
CAUTION: Housing must be tightened evenly and
thermostat must be centered into recessed groove
in timimg chain cover. If not, it may result in a
cracked housing, damaged timing chain cover
threads or coolant leaks.
(5) Install lower radiator hose on thermostat housing.
(6) Install splash shield.
(7) Lower vehicle.
(8) Fill cooling system (Refer to 7 - COOLING -
(9) Connect negative battery cable to battery.
(10) Start and warm the engine. Check for leaks.

how often is this thing supposed to be replaced? Are they failsafe, my truck has been running cold and i assume its a bad stat.

It's very likely that your t-stat is stuck open and needs to be replaced. It's a 5 dollar part and fairly easy to replace so that's definitely where I would start if I were you.

i dont believe they are fail safe i imagine u can get one, but me personally i had one in my truck and it ran a lil warm one night in town but it did work like it was supposed to...but i dont believe ill use another one... good luck on the 4.7 stat change ive never had to on one but it looks FUN....

It is actually very easy to change the stat on the 4.7. I think even the gasket is rubber, if i remember.

jdb, Ft. Hood, TX
1999 Dodge Ram 360 V-8, diesel radiator, 180 degree thermostat, flow-kooler high perf water pump, automatic, tow package (stock tranny cooler removed for one 3 times the stock size, fits in same spot), 10,000 mile engine oil changes- non synthetic oil, open element K&N, Flex-a-lite monster dual electric fan, three small electric fans in front of A/C condensor, cab high topper. Moved to Fort Hood this past summer: pulled a GCWR 16880 pound trailer in 105 degree weather - ran max water temp of 205. No blown head gasket/trans problems/pickup is fine.

1998 Jeep Wrangler, 2.5 4 cyl, 5 speed, 6 cyl radiator, 2" lift, 31" tires/rims bought used, other mods as above, more mods (lockers, rear dana 44) hopefully coming.

2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee, mods as above, 150,000 miles.

2003 Jeep Liberty, mods as above, with the exception of 185 degree therm. to get CEL to stay off. (still working that)

1937 John Deere model "B" tractor, hand start, restored, .150 over, alum pistons, crankshaft has never been out of the tractor, no thermostat or water pump stock, 150 degree water temp, K&N intake, 3 point hitch, double seat, umbrella.
