I have the 360. I looked hard and long for an extended cab, long bed, 4x4 truck, and I turned a few down because they had the 318. I didn't know much about the Dodge motors when I was in the market for my truck, but I knew I wanted the bigger cubic inch engine. I ran my neighbor's 84 Dodge with the 318 and wasn't impressed with the power. I've since learned they are a very dependable motor and you can get decent power out of them. I'm just glad I already have the 25 or so extra horses to start with and after a few modifications, I have even more. I'm just glad I'm not running the sluggish 351 Fjord any more.
I have the 318 in my Dakota, but I would have the 360 if it was ever made in a club cab 4x4 (it was never made). I don't think it get's that much worse gas mileage so why not have the bigger engine? I'm impressed with the power of the 5.2 Magnum, especially in a 'compact' truck. Plus, the 318 only has 15 less HP than the 360 (except for the R/T, which has 20 more). I do love the 318.
I've got the best engine ever made THE 318!!!!! May not be the fastest but it will run 4-ever!!!!! I just wanted a red truck and there is not much HP difference in the two engines (spoken like a guy with a 318)
The 318 in my dad's '86 Ram is pretty old and tired, so I wasn't sure what to expect in my '96 with the same engine, but it's pretty peppy. Especially with the 5-speed NVG-3500 behind it. SB/RC Ram.
That's funny when mine was just a stock 360 it shifted at 5200 and pulled hard all the way, then after the Performance computer upgrade and headers it shifted at 5800. You musta got a lemon. Besides, when you want to fix one up the 360 has lots better options, check my signature.

Ummm, the stock Hp/Tq charts in the sales packets even showed the HP curve toppin out at around 4200 RPM. But yes, once you swap a cam and open it up, the problem goes away. I'm talking stock for stock. :rck:

I have 360 in my ram. It just turned 163,800 today and still not even a knock or any wierd sound for that matter out of the motor. But, I have also heard stories about 318's with 180,000 plus miles on them with no rebuild, and still running strong.
Looks like its neck and neck at this point!
Just in case I didn't mention I have a stock 318 in my '98 Ram P/U and its the best vehicle I have owned. And its paid for!
i got a bit more than 360 under my hood but essentially its a bored out 360 with some work......and ive never seen above 4700 rpm shifts even when drag racing.....hmmm thats alright i have valve float with my cam at 5800 rpm so i want to shy away from that.....
and speeding ahead are the 360's! Got one here, and yeah love it! with the Mopar PCM it revs up to about 5500-5600rpm then finally shifts and just keeps going.
blown 360 here and when winter comes.... oh cant wait
